I think that in that "triangle" Lupin was an equivalent of Hermione, Ron of Sirius and James of his son... just a comparison...
Sirius and James might have been smart but Lupin must have been even smarter(maybe a swot?). 'Cause you learn more if you're aware that it's a gift that you can study at all (Lupin - thanks to DD).
What James did was very unright, but I agree with Alice - teenage angst.
