I think that in that "triangle" Lupin was an equivalent of Hermione, Ron of Sirius and James of his son... just a comparison...
Sirius and James might have been smart but Lupin must have been even smarter(maybe a swot?). 'Cause you learn more if you're aware that it's a gift that you can study at all (Lupin - thanks to DD).
What James did was very unright, but I agree with Alice - teenage angst.

I am unfamiliar with the term swot.
What does it mean?

I already felt that James and Sirius probably weren't the nicest most understanding people. Earlier on you get the impression that they're both a little egotistical and eragant. And this memory is Snape's and therefore somewhat exagerated in his own favor. We all prefer to remember things in our favor.

People are different, sometimes more bold around their age, or something, but I still love Sirius. Dearly.

Oh, they probably did. Egotism and befefaction are two different things. How they feuded with Snape is a whole 'nother matter. He was probably the same foul, greasy, malodious human being that he is now, he just had someone who fought back then. Remember how he acts when he has impunity. I'd say the humiliation might just have been necessary then

Or maybe, Snape has a very one sided memory and James and Sirius were the people we thought they were before

DD seems to think so

I feel quite different about Harry's Dad because i thought that harry's dad was quite a good person at first. I didn't think that he was really arrogant or a complete bully. Sirius was just as bad and lily was right to say no to him at first. But fortunatly lily helped to teach him not to be so arrogant.

You can't be a complete bully if you're having a feud. The violence was not one sided. The only difference is that Snape made the mistake of taking on one guy with friends
