he was just going by what Dumbledore had said?
Correct.
Mrs. Luca Black wrote:If you were going by what Dumbledore had said, I believe that the something of Gryffindor's was replaced by Nagini since Voldemort couldn't find anything of Gryffindor's. At least that's the impression I got from what Dumbledore said.
I think it was "something Gryffindor or Ravenclaw" as a horcrux and then Dumbledore thought that it couldn't be Gryffindor as only the sword survived, Nagini is a 'different' horcrux. Hence my list:
Dumbledore wrote:1. the ring- destroyed
2. the cup/goblet- not destroyed
3. the locket- possibly destroyed
4. the diary- destroyed
5. Something of Ravenclaw's or something of gryffindor's
6. Something else, possibly Nagini.
7. Voldemort
Although if you believe that Harry is a horcrux, I'm not sure which one of the above he would be replacing? And if Voldemort accidently and unknowingly made Harry a horcrux, then now he has eight parts of soul
Personally I don't think Harry was made a horcrux as I am sure that either:
a) someone i.e. Dumbledore, would have noticed
b) Voldemort wouldn't be afraid of him
c) the prophecy no longer makes sense, as Harry can't kill Voldemort.
d) it's not JKR's style
