Did anyone else think that the goggles were an unwanted addition?

I know that in that sort of weather it makes sense but JKR didn't seem to think it was necessary.

As a matter of fact I like the way she went out of her way to decsribe how the weather kept making it hard from everyone to see and then Hermione came up with the protection charm to keep the rain off Harry's glasses.

Sorry to interject that but when Choki mentioned them I reminded me that the goggles urked me when I saw the movie.
