Which one is your favorite so far. Are they getting even better as the characters develop over time?

Why is it that the only wand-less magic we hear about is the Love Lilly gave Harry? There's bound to be more, right?

HHmmmm.... What about the ghosts? :-?

Ghost? Do you think they can do magic?

Anyway, is that the only mention of wandless magic? I guess there're more, though I can't remember. What about when Petunia cut Harry's hair (Book 1) and it grew back?

Young wizards do wandless magic when highly agitated, but they can't control it. Also house elves do magic all the time but they don't have wands, they're not permited :)

Other forms of wandless magic include animagi transformations, broom-jinking curses, and broom-jinking counter-curses.

Also, it appears that the "Lumos" spell can be done without a wand, as Lupin demonstrated in PoA. In this case, it made the light appear in his hands rather than on the wand.

Then there is cake hovering, rooftop teleportation, snake releasing, potions, floo powder, parseltongue speech and the resurecting of evil guys.

(And I was under the impression that Lilly did use her wand to cast the love-protection spell on Harry. Was I in fact wrong?)

potions [...] floo powder [...] the resurecting of evil guys [...]

Oh, I should probably mention that these things don't require a wand, but they do require other stuff.

Potions require magical ingredients.

Floo powder requires ....well... floo powder.

The resurecting of evil guys does not seem to require a wand, however, I could be wrong here. From memory all that it seemed to require were three ingredients:

the flesh of the ally (willingly given),

the blood of the enemy (forcefully taken)

and the bone of the father (dug up out of the ground in a really creepy graveyard. Or failing that, a moderatly creepy one should do. Just avoid the nice ones.)

The other spells that I mentioned don't seem to requre anything at all though.

Oh, yeah, and other spells that can be cast without wands are the mental shattering of wine glasses (PoA) and the inflation of aunts (PoA).

Apparation... use of certain magical cleaning products...

I personally don't think Lily (is it spelled "Lilly" in other parts of the world besides the U.S.?) used a wand to protect Harry, and here's why:

Voldemort felt confident that he could overtake and kill Harry, even after Lily was dead. It was only in retrospect that he realized what had kept him from being able to kill Harry that night.

If she had performed a charm using a wand and incantation, he would have heard/seen it.

I believe that her dying to save Harry's life was what was a kind of prerequisite for the charm that Dumbledore placed on Harry after he was found, most likely using a wand/incantation. There were three parts to this magic: Lily dying to protect Harry, Dumbledore placing the charm, and Petunia sealing the charm by accepting Harry into her home.

You know, I wonder if Harry had given blood willingly if the spell to bring Voldemort wouldn't of worked. . .

^^^^^^^

That's an excellent question actaully.

Wormtail used the exact words "forcefully taken". I got the impression that it was an important part of the ritual. I also got the impression that the ritual had to be done with absoloute precision. So if even the slightest thing went wrong, it would not have worked, and Voldermort may have even drowned.

If that was the case, then all Harry had to do to prevent Voldermort's return would be to lean forward and say "go on, take as much as you like." Then Wormtail would have been all "Oh, come on! You're supposed to resist! Can you at least squirm a little when I stab you? Uh, Please..?"

That is an interesting theory about the blood but if Harry is bound to a gravestone with ropes how could he willingly give his blood?
I don't think state of mind would be a factor but if it was Harry would not have known to offer his blood freely in order to foil the process.

examples of wandless magic

PS
> harry growing his hair back
> harry strinking a revolting jumper
> harry appearing on top of the school kitchens (apparation?)
> the vanishing glass incident

COS
> harry using parsletongue

POA
> harry using the lumos spell
> harry blowing up aunt marge
> harry opening the cupboard under the stairs
> harry breaking marge's glass

OOTP
> harry using the lumos spell
> harry finding the right door out of the DOM

these are just a few examples of harry using magic that normally requires the use of a wand, off the top of my head! there are plenty more examples and the use of magic without a wand becomes more profound as the series progresses! Does anyones else think that Harry wont need a wand by the end of book 7? Afterall, his and voldie's wands cannot battle against each other due to being brother wands! it makes sense that harry and voldie battle without the use of wands!

Can you think of any examples from the books or interviews where it is stated that ghosts are able to cast magic?

I don't think walking through walls counts, because ghosts are non-corporial and passing through solid objects is an inherent ability in their nature. I wouldn't consider that as "magic".
