<sweetly ignoring the bickering>
Just generally considering OotP, and i think its where Harry is talking to Lupin. he says that Snape was up to his eyes in the dark arts. But it never says if he was actually any good at DADA.

I know logically if you were good at curses etc, you would probably be good at defending yourself from them- but Snape didn't really do a very good job in his memory in OotP. maybe he failed his OWL or NEWT in DADA. Which is why Dumbledore doesn't want to give him the job.

Hello Phaerie :) (does that mean fairy?)

umm.. sorry phaerie (lol that rhymes) but i disagree with you there. he got beaten by james and sirius as they were as good as him , outnumbering him and he was taken by surprise. being a deatheater and a member of the order, i would assume he is good at DADA.

as for DD refusing him because he failed, that is a supern solution in its simplicity, it would completely knock off all the theorising that we have done. however that would be a tame wont it?

I can't believe it's just because he's too good at potions, simply because that would be too boring. JKR puts so much emphasis on that part, like the constant rumours or Umbridge's comment, that there must be something more to it.
