Artemis Fowl...are you a fan?

Postby James87 » Tuesday 20 January 2004 11:39:01am

Let me just say, before I am stoned, that I love HArry Potter, and the Artemis Fowl series is extremely different from Harry Potter for many reasons. Those reasons I won't go into deeply, as it may ruin the great storyytelling that oin COlfer does. The main difference is morals. HArry Potter is a good guy, loves to help people. Artemis Fowl is a manipulative, 12 year old genious who is a criminal, which is actually what makes the series so interesting. So are there any other fans here? Am I all alone?

I own and read the first book. I enjoyed it but I haven't read the others. Something about them is neat...I can't say they are my favorite but they are a good read.

First of all, Artemis is a name of Greek goddess, not god. What was Eoin Colfer thinking?

I have had the first two parts and I liked them first, but then I didn't know about Tolkien and Robin Hobb. There are much better books than Fowl's. Colfer's books are very boring and that whole theme is just so stupid and boring and not interesting. And I don't understand those technology-parts at all. I sold them to one of my friends for 10 euros.

I got the Artemis Fowl books because everyone was comparing them to Harry Potter. I have to say though that they are no where near as good as HP... JK Rowling drew me into Harry's world, while I just felt like a confused outsider when reading Artemis Fowl. I never really felt I could empathise with the characters, or understand why they made the decisions they did. I felt the characters were not as easy to identify with as HP characters. I mean, they're both living in worlds so different to our own, but with HP I could still empathise, understand their feelings on a base level. I couldn't do that with Artemis Fowl.

BUT that said, those are just my feelings. I think that everyone enjoys different styles of writing, and they cross over with some authors.

But Eoin Colfer isn't the only one to use Artemis as a boys name, isn't that the name of the white cat in Sailor Moon?
