This is difficult to compare. I've read most of Tolkien books some years ago (before Harry Potter) and loved them. It's amazing how he was able to create all those languages, history, mythology... However, since that I've read Mervyn Peake who is very difficult to read, but I found it wonderful. Compared to this, Tolkien is too "perfect" - his characters aren't that deep, they're either good or bad (no one like Snape, maybe Gollum a bit...) and it's almost like a fairy tale. Harry Potter is first of all a book for children, so we can't really compare them. But personally, now I prefer HP to LOTR. Not that I don't like Tolkien anymore, his books are very, very good...
