Dan Brown - Angels and Demons
Dan Brown - The Da Vinci Code! yeah!!!

Those are both awesome books, and the Da Vinci Code even throws in a little tip of the hat to Harry Potter as being the best selling books of all time.

Other than that...LOTR are awesome, and the Dirk Pitt books by Clive Cussler, as well as most books by Tom Clancy.

Try these out

The Sword of Truth Series

There are eight books in this series. It's somewhat LOTR like but a bit more epic.
The author is Terry Goodkind and the first two books are called Wizard's First Rule and Stone of Tears

These are some of my favourites:

Oscar Wilde - anything esp. The Picture of Dorian Gray and his fairy tales
Virginia Woolf - Mrs Dalloway
Mervyn Peake - Gormenghast trilogy
George Orwell - 1984

I'm a student of literature (but I also read Anne Rice for relaxation), therefore the choice. I adore Oscar Wilde.

Dk if ne1 mentioned these, but here goes
Ender's Game-kinda like a futurist HP series but aimed for an older audience and I honestly think it's better.
Robotech-great mecha anime-inspired series.

I swear to God - everyone who has EVER read this book [that i know of anyways] has LOVED this book. I recommend it to anyone.

Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold

It's about a girl who is dead. Yes - she is already dead when the book begins. She was murdered. The book is about what she sees looking down from heaven. It describes her looking at her family, her murderer trying to cover up what he did, her boyfriend and friends and how everyone copes with her death.

It's absolutely magnetic and I highly recommend it for anyone who loves to read... and who likes to cry too!

what I can recommend is "Water Music" by T.C. Boyle...his style of writing is just hilarious and the story is half-realistic / half his own fantasies about a british explorer in africa...

I can highly recommend the book which I'm reading at the moment:

The Bean Trees by Barbara Kingsolver

From Publishers Weekly:
Feisty Marietta Greer changes her name to "Taylor" when her car runs out of gas in Taylorville, Ill. By the time she reaches Oklahoma, this strong-willed young Kentucky native with a quick tongue and an open mind is catapulted into a surprising new life. Taylor leaves home in a beat-up '55 Volkswagen bug, on her way to nowhere in particular, savoring her freedom. But when a forlorn Cherokee woman drops a baby in Taylor's passenger seat and asks her to take it, she does.

It's so much fun to read this book because Kingsolver has not only developed a creative story but also great metaphors and a witty style!

Lord of the Rings. I know, it's been said many times before, but it can be said many more times. It's the best book ever, much better than HP which is definatley saying something, because HP is excellent.
I also reccomend the Count of Monte Cristo. Very interesting story of betrayal and revenge.
