The Isolation of Malfoy?

I've always found it...almost tacky, that NO slytherin ever takes the side of "good". For god's sake, there must be one...bump on the straight line that is the Slytherin House, there's some in all the houses.

Excellent point Charis!! If there is more to Malfoy (I'm not too sure about this given the way he appears to have been brought up) I don't see how we are going to get to see it without a complete change in outlook by Malfoy. As the narrative around the book revolves around Harry unless Malfoy starts hanging around Harry, we aren't going to see much of him.
Maybe Malfoy turns out alright in the future like Snape (yes I know he's a bit evil too, but Dumbledore trusts him and that's good enough for me!)

Remember, James was a brat in his first 5 (or 6) years at Hogwarts too, then had a complete change, so to speak. Maybe Malfoy'll change like he did?

Harry was nearly put in Slytherin.....
I can't imagine he would suddenly have gone bad if he were put in there. So I guess there must be some good kids. But it might be peer pressure. If there are a significant few people in Slytherin who are a threat, they could make life a misery for the others.

But to the best of our knowledge, James had great parents. Malfoy has grown up hearing about how muggle-born wizards are impure and how muggles are inferior and how Voldy had the right idea. It's hard to break away from your upbringing

thats true. 9 times out of ten you become like the people you're surrounded by, and Malfoy (before he came to Hogwarts) was surrounded by his horrible parents. that philosophy could also explain why most slytherins seem to be bad. you hang out with people from your house, and if alot of the popular people in your house are mean and nasty, there's a good chance it'll rub off on you. like Hermy said, it might be peer pressure. But, then again, the trio in gryffindor tend to spend more time with just eachother than they do with other people from their house, so there could be a small band of nice slytherins? I'm just writing every thing that comes into my head right now, though, haven't really given these theories a whole lot of thought.

Yeah, I like the idea that there could be a gang of good slytherins, prolly nowhere near as cool as the Gryffindor trio, but not Death Eater material, either

there is always a bad apple in every barrel, much like Peter Pettigrew in Gryffindor...but hey, perhaps a "bad apple" in slytherin would be a goodie, right? I'm sure there is atleast one good slytherin...

That's a bit harsh Meg! Slytherin just have different qualitities. You can't just say that "Gryffindor are brave, Ravenclaw are brainy, Slytherin are bad..."

I didn't mean it to be harsh, that's exactly what I am saying, not everybody is like what their house qualities demand...I am just saying JKR has set up these stereotypes in her story, and that sometimes there is a black sheep to these stereotypes she has created...sorry for soundeding harsh...

Malfoy (Draco) is a product of his breeding. He was raised to think pure-bloods were the only kind of wizard worth knowing.

However, unlike another person who was a product of breeding (Sirius Black), he knew it, and rejecteded it. Sirius rejected it and all it stood for. Both accepted each other knowing they had turned their backs on the so called purity of blood.

Harry's early choice was pure blood, or character. He knew little then, but ultimately decided that poor wizards who had characater were better than arrogant pure bloods.

I hope that Malfoy plays a much smaller role in the rest of the story. His is just too cliched in children's books. Malfoy is the typical spoiled rich kid who is a bully. Maybe if they gave Malfoy some depth, but right now he is just an evil kid.

On another note, I wonder if DD will be tougher on kids that cause trouble. Obviously schooling has become so much more important. If kids like Malfoy cause unrest and fighting, I wonder if DD will kick them out of school? After be validated in the last book, DD won't be as subtle in his opinions.

We have to assume that there is something more to Malfoy's character seeing as he was made prefect byDD himself. So DD must see something in Malfoy's character other than what we have seen so far. We don't know how he bahaves in classes when its just the Slytherins, like DADA, or Charms for instance.

Eol...... I was never really clear on this. Does the headmaster choose the prefects for each house or does Snape / McGonigal etc. I not sure what you would call their position, housemaster / housemistress.
