The Isolation of Malfoy?

Postby Eol » Sunday 3 August 2003 4:23:53pm

Now that his dad has been sent to Azkaban, and everybody knows that Voldy is back, do you think that Malfoy will find himself isolated at Hogwarts if he even returns at all? I mean, surely everyone in Slytherin is not evil.. are they? I seem to recall traits of slytherin pupils being ambition and resourcefulness-> that doesn't seem evil to me

Well, I would think that most students will have a fierce dislike of him because of his father, the death-eater. Now, normally I don't agree with such a thing, because you can hardly hold anyone responsible for the actions of his or her parents, but Draco strongly agrees with the things his father did (probably because he was raised that way), so well, disliking him isn't strange. So yes, he'll be a bit isolated.

Will Dumbledore ask the students not to treat them (malfoy and other children of death eaters) badly? I think he'll ask once again for all the houses to stand together against evil. And now that evil's returned and everyone knows it, the stand together thing might not be impossible!

Lucius Malfoy has a lot of pull in the wizarding world. He managed to avoid prison the last time the Death Eaters fell. Also considering that the Dementors have turned to LV there's no guarantee that LM will still be in prison at the start of book six.

thats a good point about the dementors, Huey. they'll have to find other beings to guard the prison.

I think that Lucius was caught in the act, and I kind of doubt that he'll be able to worm his way out of this one. it is possible, though, that he'll escaoe from prison some way.

about Malfoy. He was not generally liked at school anyway, except among the slytherins. i think that his posse will probably stick with him, as most of their parents were/are death eaters as well. i think his dad being put into jail will mostly just serve to intensify everyone else's dislike of him. but, also, some people might be more afraid of him. maybe the dislike some people have of him won't be as openly shown since they know that his family was involved in the dark arts?

Maybe Draco will finally get a nice taste of what being ridiculed is like...

Maybe it'll give a chance for the Three Muskateers to see the inner workings of Malfoy. Not to say they'll become best friends and everything, but it would give us (the readers) A better understanding of the Malfoy family and mental stability at least.

Maybe Lucius' sudden, exit from social life will cause Narcissa to become more prominent in the 6th book...I'd like to see that!

I am torn in half. It's either going to go one way or the other. By this is mean the Malfoy's will play a huge role, or fade into nothingness and become very unimportant. I can't decide. I am leaning toward they won't be very important but I dunno. What do you think?

the isolation of malfoy

Postby Just Mom » Tuesday 5 August 2003 6:29:26am

I concur with Devinci on this subject..

With dad in prison (IF he makes it to prison and stays there) it will provide a literary opportunity for Mrs. Malfoy, as the new primary, custodial parent to make her appearance and she is someone we haven't really met yet. It's possible, she could be a great deal more sinister than Lucius and we may discover her influence and control over draco and perhaps even with lucius is the most powerful of all. Sometimes behind the scenes of seemingly powerful men, there can be a woman calling the shots...

This would also allow Draco, to not fall into total disgrace at Hogwarts...if mum shows up and runs the show. Lucius may be in prison, but she's still free as a bird and if their wealth has been untouched by his downfall, draco will still be able to flash the latest gear for quidditch.

2. Other possibility...homeschool for witches and wizards? I'm kidding.

But Malfoy does say that his dad will be out of Azkaban in no time. If Lucius does break free, then people are more likely to be scared of Draco knowing that his father is an escaped deatheater. Think about Sirius Black's reputation...

The Isolation of Malfoy

That's a good point. However, Sirius' escape from Azkaban made him more an object of fear because everyone knew the dementors were guarding the prison and now they're not there anymore. Draco saying his father would be out in no time, could be just a teenager's boast or he might be saying that because it's his mother who's going to get him out...which leads back to my first conclusion that it wouldn't surprise me if Mrs. Malfoy made her debut sometime soon. And that could start whole new thread of wondering what she's going to be like.

I think the mere fact that Lucius is a Deatheater is enough to inspire fear in everybody. Just look at the reaction they got at the Quidditch world cup. Some excellent replies so far people keep it up!!!
But the main issue I was hoping to raise in this topic was whether we would see (for a change) some good people emerging from Slytherin and taking Harry's rather than Malfoy's side. Perhaps we'd see a group of all the deatheaters' children break away from the rest of Slytherin.

But I imagine a few of the people in Slytherin have relatives who are deatheaters - Crabbe and Goyle for example. They are probably more likely to stick with Malfoy. Although I would guess it depends who they see as more threatning, Voldemort or Dumbledore.

The Isolation of Malfoy

Excellent tip Eol...
So far, JKR has written Malfoy as pretty straightforwardly(that's probably not a word) yucky. I was trying to think back to any situation where there was a glimmer of redemption present anywhere with Malfoy and I couldn't think of a single one. He sulks. He steals. He insults. He lies. He cheats. He's a bigot. It would be a good "life lesson" if JKR decided to write Malfoy with a few more positive qualities and scenes for very few of us are either all good or all bad...

Rev Mom this may apply: In GoF, at the Yule Ball Malfoy was stunned at how pretty Hermione looked that he couldn't even insult her

Erm... I don't think that's a GOOD thing. I read a critique of the book and one of the few complaints the author could come up with was that Malfoy was too much of a storybook villain, you know, "twirling his mustachios", evil chuckle, etc. He's all bad! And the Slytherins are kinda that way too. It's really much easier to label everyone, so it just works out that if you're in Slytherin you're a creep. I mean, look at their password. It seems a little unrealistic to me that 1/4 of all young wizards are evil and pure-blooded, but hey... They're the type we love to hate.

it seems unrealistic that all slytherins are bad, to me, too. I'm sure there's a few good ones in the house. :) i think Draco is kind of an unrealistic villian, but i also think theres more to him than we see. I'm not a Draco lover who thinks he's good on the inside, but i do think that some of his nastiness is a cover up for something else. what, i don't know. insecurity perhaps.

I hope we'll get to meet some more slytherins in the upcoming books. there's bound to be a couple who aren't all bad, isn't there? Draco is definitely the leader of the nasty ones, and probably most everyone else sort of goes along with him.

Remember, slytherin himself was not always a bad man. he and gryffindor were at one time very good friends, but, slytherin did become corrupted. the qualities that slytherin had (ambition, resourcefulness) are good qualities, but are also easily corrupted buy lust for power, as we have seen in slytherin himslef, and LV.
