Ravenclaw

Which one is your favorite so far. Are they getting even better as the characters develop over time?

I think that the way JK wrote about the different students from the houses in he books is really good. Its kindof branching out on what we know, what we think we know and what we want to be true.

i agree fully that it would be nice to have a couple of 'steryotypical' students from each house. a hermione type figure for Ravenclaw and a neville type charicter for Hufflepuff we have draco and harry for the others.Maybie JK is showing that modern children don't fit into the typical steryotypes of yesteryear. She is showing that the qualitys can be there, but in a totally different aspect to usual. like luna, being wise and wavey but she marked the door in the room didn;t she? ( or was it hermione?ahh its late) and cho maybe annoying, but she is also usually reserved, and studious. she did work really hard in the DA. and although Neville isn't the natural choice for Gryffindor he has courage and stands up for things when he needs to.

Well you could hazard a guess. Say there are 5 Gryffindors including Harry in his year. Presume an identical number of females and in all other houses and years.

That gives 40/year * 7(years) = 280 + teachers = 300ish

So I would say 300 is a good rough estimate, but I only know 4 Slytherin boys in Draco's year etc so it is a rough estimate.

JK mentions in an interview on BBC2 that there are approximately 1000 students at Hogwarts. It's a really good interview that was just done in the last couple of weeks. The transcript is online. It offers more info than any other that I've seen online.

Hogwarts Students

Postby highsorcerer » Thursday 10 July 2003 11:53:25am

1000 students doesn't make sense unless Hogwarts contains post-graduate students (perhaps for special training for Aurors).

1000 students would imply 143 students in each year.

Sorted into four houses, that would put 35 students in each house per year.

Sorted into two sexes, it would put about 18 students per house, per year, per s*x.

We only know of 5 males in Gryffindor of Harry's year (Harry, Ron, Neville, Seamus, and Dean), and the dorm only had the five beds. We only know of 3 Gryffindor females in Harry's year (Hermoine, Lavender, and Patvil). So unless other houses have massive numbers of students in them, or there are additional dorm rooms for lots of unknown students, something is wrong with the numbers.

I never figured bed space into the equasion BTW, I figure the dorms are enchanted like the Room of Requirements and expand or contract to adapt to the number of students in each house / s*x / year.

I agree that 1000 students is a bit far-fetched, although Rowling did confirm it. I suspect that she probably just took a number off the top of her head when someone asked this question, without thinking much about it. As highsorcerer said (and I did a calculation myself too) it just doesn't make much sense if there are 1000 students...

Of course, there may be many other students which are not mentioned at all before... but from the descriptions of the various events and meetings and lessons where the Hogwarts students participate it, it's just unlikely...
