* SPOILER * - Intense Part, Starting Laughing Uncontrollably

Postby KBIG104 » Friday 4 July 2003 8:48:57pm

* NOTICE: This contains many spoilers. *

When the DA memebers went to the department of secrets, and were trying to flee, naturally I thought Hermione was the one to die - until they found that she had a pulse.

Then I was SURE it was going to be Ron. He started acting really stupid, and listening to it being read by the talented Mr. Jim Dale on cassette, I was very worried. What if Ron was permanantly crazy? Would he die? Surely this must be the end of Ron . . . he'd never be the same.

(By the way, what did they hit him with anyway?)

However, I don't know if JK Rowling meant it as a humourous break in an intense scene but when they walk by the brain tank I started to crack up laughing.

"Wow Harry Brains!" - And then the part that made be laugh uncontollably: "Aseo Brain!"

Did anyone else find this hilarious? Sure it about strangled him, but imagining an insanse Ron calling a brain to him was just too funny!

Thank goodness I'm not the only one who found this intentional/unintentional 'comic relief' hilarious!

It was just so crazy . . . Ron acting all goofy and calling deadly brains to him . . . it made the next part where he started getting really unhappy about them all the more creepy and off-the wall.

I can't imagine what that whole part of the book must be like when read aloud . . . how did you enjoy it, KBIG104? :-) My mother loves the books on tape (actually, CD :D ), so I look forward to getting them for her when the price goes down a bit! Don't worry, you're not alone  . . . during what was a very traumatizing and intense part of the book (where I suspecting EVERYONE of being 'the one to die' ) the 'accio brains' was just what I needed!

After hearing the tapes, I can't really stand the movies. The voices Jim Dale uses for the characers rarely change, and are the ones I expect to hear when I watch the movies, only to be dissappointed that they aren't.

I started the series at listening to Book 2 - Book 4, and went back to read Book 1. After "hearing" Books 2-4, I "heard" the same voices Jim Dale uses when I read Book 1.

Plus it makes the drive to Southern California a lot shorter.

However, I listened to the "Quibbler" story to the end of the novel in one afternoon, ending around midnight, so I missed many details.

Did they ever say what hit Ron, or how he was cured? I was convinced it was permanant at the time. What about Hermione? It sounded like she was killed.

The last is also Fawked ("forks"?). I don't remember him being killed. Is he dead?

Storytelling

Postby highsorcerer » Friday 4 July 2003 11:54:00pm

Actually, it's a sign of good storytelling when something amusing happens in the middle of an intense sequence. It's applied psychology; the human mind an get overburdened by intensity, and gropes around for a release. Humor provides that, and breaks the tension enough that a new intense sequence can follow.

Look for this in other books and films. It's consistant.

I thought that this was the best part of the book. it's my favorite part out of all five books. It's just so great how all this intense/serious stuff is going on, and then you have Ron screaming out for brains! I think that crazy Ron juxtaposed with this dangerous situation was a great way to break some of the tension.

No they haven't mentioned Ron's affliction or it's cure and Hermione was hit with a spell too weak to kill her as the caster couldn't speak at the time and could only do the wand motions, otherwise she'd be dead now; it did incapacitate her for some time though. Fawkes was hit by Avada Kedavra which killed him; however he merely rose from the ashes as a baby pheonix again :-) .

In the book I actually found the Ron and Hermione death scenes more emotionally wrought than the Sirius scene. I'm not convinced we've seen the end of Sirius.

When I first read the death scene, I thought much of the same thing, the Sirius really hadn't died and that he'd surely return at the neginning of the next book. But then I remembere JK saying in an interview how emotional it was for her to write it and how it was final. I think that if we do see Sirius again, that it'll have to do with Harry crossing over to the other side of the veil, or something along those lines. But if he completely comes back from the dead, I think it would be a bit forced.

And as for the 'Accio Brains' part, it was definitely amusing but in a kind of cynical way. I mean, there was clearly something wrong with Ron that was forcing him to act this way, so though it was a funny scene, it was sad in that this humour was a result of Ron's delusion and impairment. Meh, not sure if that made any sense...

It makes sense to me...initially, I laughed, because with all that tension, it was a release, but when he (Ron) got upset about what the brains were doing to him, that snapped me back to what had happened to Ron...and really, to all of them... :o

Um.....I must be the only person but...... i didn't think it was funny at all!!!! I was sooooooooooo nervous of what was gonna happen, that I completely disregarded Ron's comments and they actually just made me worry more, because I had a feeling that Ron was gonna hurt himself (which he did)
