Unexpected Powers?

Postby Holly Golightly » Sunday 22 June 2003 7:23:36am

I do remember someone saying that someone in OOTP we wouldn't suspect was supposed to get some unexpected powers... and theorising that it would be one of the Dursleys, or Filtch, or someone like that...>?

Was that just an unconfirmed rumour, or not? I though that it was more, but I cannot think of who got unexpected powers in OOTP...

We heard alot about Neville improving, but he really wasn't always that bad... just in Potions. After all, he did manage to pass the end of year exams for four years now... :-?

*Holly is very confused :???: *

In the interview I read, it seemed that whoever gains those unexpected powers, they gain it "late in their life" and somewhere in the 6th or 7th book is when it happens.

Honestly though, as sick as it is, my guess is it's Mr. Dursley. I really don't see Filch doing anything spectacular any time soon.. especially after finishing the 5th book, and his attachment to the Ministry lady (I've already forgotten her name.. shame on me.. time to re-read book 5!), but there really isn't any mention of anyone else in the books who can't do magic, besides Mr. Dursley.

Now, I'll probably be WAY the heck off, but, It's a cute idea when you think about it. =)

Yeah, I dont' think that I ever really though that it would be Filtch either, I was more thinking Mrs or Dudley Dursley!!! :D

After all, they have it in their blood from Lily, and I don't know that Mr D has any magical relations... :-? *though I suppose neither does Hermoine ;) *

I think that Dudley would be hillarious! How would that spoil the perefectly normal family at No4 Privet drive??? Their prefect, and totally normal son, a wizard!!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!
I think that one of them, if not both his parents, would have to be comitted afterwards! They would jsut go insane!!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

Ahhh I just remembered something from the 5th book... Arabella Figg is a Squib. Maybe it's HER? She's really old apparently, and she gripes about not being able to od magic too.... Wow, now THAT would be cool...

What about...

Postby APWBD » Sunday 22 June 2003 8:12:23pm

Well, Dumbledore and the prophecy both declare that Harry is the one who recieves new powers. The prophecy says that "HE WILL HAVE POWER THE DARK LORD KNOWS NOT" and Dumbledore says that in the Department of Mysteries, "it is the power held within that room that you possess in such quantities and whichVoldemort has not at all". Doesn't it seem as though Harry is the one to get new powers?

P.S.~ J.K. Rowling may have implied another character...I never heard that rumor about a character gaining new powers... if it isn't Harry about whom she's talking about, then I would say that it's going to be Neville. (He too was born on July 31st, and J.K. Rowling loves that date; it's her Birthday as well)

I thought the power DD was referring to was Harry's heart?

I think the person getting unexpected powers was Mrs. Figg being a squib. I thought that was cool. That's the only thing in this book I can think of.

Maybe next book it will be Petunia. I think that would be a riot.

I had interpreted as being Neville that gained this power. I mean, for me, the most shocking thing about the book was the fact that Harry and Neville could have easily been in the other's shoes at this point in time, as told by the Prophecy. Had Voldemort attacked Neville instead of Harry, and thus 'marked him as an equal,' Neville could have been the famous wizard who had defeated LV as a baby and Harry could have been the squibish wizard who's overshadowed by his peers. This revelation somewhat dscredits the power that Harry has, and shows that Neville could have just as easily had the same. Now that Harry knows this, I imagine that the two will share an even greater bond than they do already. And Neville absolutely rocked my socks in the book. :D

Yeah, I totally loved Neville in the new book too, he was excellent!!!

But withthe Harry and Neville thing. I htinkthat even if Voldie had attacked Neville instead, Harry would still be a powerful wizard. Not to the extent that he is now... but not as squibish as Neville originally was... I think that alot of Neville's lack of power or whatever comes from the ordeal his parents went through, and he's somehow sub-conciously blocking his power becuase of it... traumertised and the like.. and his Gran always telling how much better his Dad was then him!!!

Also, how could Mrs Figg be the one to have gotten enexpected powers already...she doesnt' have any? *Or am I just reading that wrong? *

I think that Lily just meant how we originally thought Figg to be this batty od muggle woman and how now we've realised she's a Squib and has an association with the Muggle world. True, she hasn't really gained any magical powers. but we now realise that'd she's much more than we originally thought her to be, ne?

And Holly, you brought up a good point about Neville's grandmother always bringing him down. I can't remember if her personality was discussed in the previous books, but it came as quite a shock that she treated him so meanly!

I dont' think that she is intentionally mean to him.. morelike a bit on the bitter sude, because her son and daughter-in-law were so horribly taken away, yet not dead, and kind of dissapointed in Neville that he isnt' 'upholding the family honour'... I think that she is a good person, just unintentionally puts Neville down alot...

Poor Neville...

:???: I think it's Ginny( i might be wrong) But didn't one of the twin says that Ginny hexes and jinxes were suprising great?

From all the hypes that Mrs.Figg was actually some powerful witch that helps to guard and protects Harry.. :-? :-? Kinda disappointed she's a Squib.... Well hope there will be more memebersd of OotP will be introduced. And someobdy might teach Harry some new curse or spell. Neville have a relatives, are they part of the memebers too? Who are they, have they been introduced yet? :???:

   Neville and Ginny really are cool in this book... And Ron is now acting like an oeverprotective brother to Ginny  I think it's kinda cool Ron is protective of Ginny

IIRC, JK said that people are born with magical abilities and when they are born, they are put on a list or something. Then McGonagall checked the list each summer and sent letters to everyone on the list who was old enough to go to Hogwarts. However, although it's very rare, some people can acquire magical powers late in life, and someone will do that later in the series, so I suppose that it has yet to happen. I think that it'll be Mrs. Dursley!

i agree with Blaise, it has to be Neville or Harry! Neville - because he is just bound to be more powerful now that he is helping Harry out. And Harry - because he is gonna learn to use the power of his heart.

I think I read on the hplexicon that Neville might be so squiblike, because of a lot memory-charms performed on him, in order to make him forget what he saw when his parents were tortured. Yeah here it is, http://www.hp-lexicon.org/longbottom.html under the piece on Neville.
I think that's a good explanation for Neville being a disaster at magic for so long, and I'm overjoyed to see that he's becoming better and better at it! Go Neville :P!
