Well Hermione for sure will be made a prefect; but I don't think Harry will be one, it would be too much for him, I mean he usually doesn't have much time, and now a prefect, I don't think so.

Okies, trying to figure out something here...

Precefts are only from 5th 6th and 7th yr, right?

So, if htey are divided evenly between house and year and s*x, there has to be a minimum of 8 in every yr, and 24 at one time...

Percy said that there were two carridges reserved for the prefects at the beguining of book one, so will two carridges hold 24 people, or possibly 48 people if there are two from each gender, each house and each yr???

What thinks?
(Note, I have never been on a train before, so I have no idea???)

I agree in that; but I think that there aren't prefects for 7th year, since now they are Head boy/girls.

I thought that there was only one head boy and one head girl... ie James and Lily in their year, and Percy was the only one, right?

Anyways, that woud mean if there were 48 people, four from girffindor in Harry's year...
Mermoine is pretty much a given... wonder who the other three are???

We do not know anyone from the year above Harry's; we can only think of the other one in the same year, and must be a boy; I still think it will be Neville.

I'm not sure that there would be four from one year. After all, there are only eight Gryffindor students in Harry's year, so taking four as prefects would be a bit much. I think that having two would be the most logical arrangement. That would make a total of eight prefects per year (in all of Hogwarts.) Taking into account the sixth years, we get sixteen. And of the eight 'would-be' prefects for seventh year, I'd imagine that they choose two of them to be head boy and head girl. So that gives us a total of 24 Prefects/Head Children at Hogwarts.
Ack, I just read it over and methinks that was confusing...

yeah, i don't think that there will be 4 per house, i think only two, and i don't think that there are prefects in 7th year either and there is only one head boy and girl

I just thought of another thing. Do they keep the same prefects throughout the fifth, sixth, and seventh years, or do they change them at the beginning of each new year? I mean, say Hermione is made a prefect and then her grades drastically fall, would they remove her as a prefect?

12321: what happend to all the other people that were prefects in 6th yr then, as there is only one head boy and one head girl???

Blaise: I wonder... unless they failed, I think that they would stay on as prefects, just get a warning to improve their grades, and I thinkt hat it's more than just grades, it's also an additude thing too! And maybe if they fail, the obv repeat and get their prefect thing taken away, and someone else is prmotedin their stead...

i think that all the prefects in 6th year would compete, and then, whoever "wins" is head boy/girl, and the others have nothing

Yeah, that makes sense, Holly.
And I think it would be more logical if all of the sixth year prefects remained prefects for their seventh year and that two of those eight were chosen to be Head Boy and Girl.

I don't agree on that Blaise, for 7th year there is only one Head/boy girls from all the houses, and 16 prefects from sixth and fifth. Making it 18.
And they should stay; I mean by fifth grade prefects aren't going to change drastically from one year to another.

Yeha, I'm with you there Blaise!

12321, I dont' think that it will be a competition thing, becuase after all, the point of hte prefects is to hjelp look after the other students, show then around, keep them out of trouble and danger... so why would they get rid of all the 7th yr ones with moe experience? It's not just a prestige thing after all, theirs jobs it to look out for younger students!

Also, about the 2 or 4 per house per year thing, that is why I was asking about the size of train carriges earlier on... (since I've never been on a train before!!!)

Well, maybe there are less prefects than the ones to full the carrige; but based in the number of students per grade, it must be one boy and one girl, no?
