artemis fowl is also good though ive only got the first book though but i want the rest...i actually originally only bought the book for its shiny...pretty front cover....i like the book too though...but the covers.....need the rest of the series...all those sparkly covers....

I wanted to ask that same question. But they don't have to be about magical / mystical stuff to me... Can anyone recommend some books that are just funny to read, like HP?

Lol, or anything by Tolkein, for that matter!
Enders Game by Orson Scott Card is terrific, and actually has quite a few paralles with the HP series.
Actually aything by Card, I recently finished Speaker for the Dead and it was excellent. Ender's Shadow the parallel novel to Ender's Game is good, as well.
Erm, anything and everything by Douglas Adams, notably The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.
The His Dark Materials trilogy by Phillip Pullman is v. good. Reading it has made the HP-waiting time pass quicker!
Oh yes, and HP Fanfic. It has been my saving grace...
For some non-Fantasy/Sci-Fi based reading, I reccomend Faulkner (because he's the man,) Hemingway (because he's pretty close to being the man,) Dickens, Milton, Shakespeare...
Meh, am such a literature nerd.

i gotta say that Terry Brooks is a good author...

hes got several series...one about demons and set sort of in our modern world called the Word and the Void (running with the demon is the first of the 3 books)

one about a guy who buys a magic kingdom from some american magazine and becomes king of it...though ive only read one book but its called Magic Kindgom for Sale/Sold (bought all the rest of the books a few weeks ago will read em when i get home  )

or if you like lotr he has the most massive series about The Sword of Shannara which is like 10 books long at the moment but hes writing 3 more...only i would say the prequel and the first book are extremely similar to lotr

Magic! Has to have magic!!!!! :)

Word and the Void - is it scary? I don't like horror stories.

His Dark Materials - I read a good review for it somewhere, I should check it out.

The lion, the witch and the wardrobe - is it same as the first book? Will I understand the rest of Chronicals of Narnia if I won't read the first book?

Im writing all of your reccomendations down, thank you!

need the rest of the series...all those sparkly covers....

Sonkem! Thats how I became interested in those series!!! LOL I can't believe there is another crazy person like me.

anyway.....as for the narnia thing....i read The lion the witch and the wardrobe first...its been on tv too...i always used to think it was the first book till i got the full series...anyways, there is a movie of Artemis Fowl and also a movie of The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe planned....probably wont actually be released for a few years but i know they are planned.

Ack, was me that said Ender's Game was similar to HP. Not in the magical aspect, but in that Harry and Ender are very similar character wise and a lot of the situations have parallels with the other.
For instance, Harry and Ender are both sent off to a 'special' school at a semi-early age. Unbeknowst to the two of them, they also have some eventual greater role to play in history (Ender's role in the Third bu***r War and Harry's in the Battle against Voldemort.) Both school somewhat revolve around games (Battle School has the Battle Room and all the simulations and Hogwarts has Quidditch and the Triwizard Tournament.) In Ender's Game, the armies compete for standing on the board and in HP, houses compete for house points. Both Ender and Harry have a good side and a bad side. Ender has Valentine (good) and Peter (not-so-good,) while Harry has his own goodness and a bit of Voldemort's evil in him. So disregarding the fact the one if Fantasy and has magical elements and the other is purely Sci-Fi, the two books have the same basic premise.

I've also read series by David Eddings and Terry Goodkind... I dont' know how similar to HP these are, but have the magic thing going for them, and I think that they are good!!! 8)

I also like a couple of Stephen King's books... not the scary ones though. :o
He's written a 'Dark Tower' series, or something like that! (I think, I dont' actually have them here!) It's pretty darn good, it's just that I dont' know if he will ever finish it!!! *and neither does he aparently!* :-?

I've read some Sara Douglass books too. I did like them, but hated the ending, so went off her work... :evil grin:

Now I'm just looking for new books... but I need to wait till break!
If I get into reading a book, I wont' do anything else till it's finished... I'll eat, but while reading! No sleep, no going to uni, no work, no assignments, no nothing, just read!!! :D

It's a great series Holly, I highly recommend them. The next book is due out this fall and the remainder of the series (already written) will be published after that. If you haven't read them, I would start now to be ready for the new ones.
