Career or ambition

Postby choki » Wednesday 3 September 2008 9:06:01am

 couldn't really join into the university thread cos I already graduated few yrs ago, so this thread can be for those working adults and young aspiring kids for their career/ambition!

for me, I have plenty of ambitions when I'm a kid

I love dinosaur so I dreamt of being a palenotogist (dig fossils) when I grow up but unfortunately the real prospect of the job in my country is simply unrealistic. I'm more likely to hit a gas/electric pipes when digging

I also love marine creatures (dolphins! orcas!) when I was much older (probably when I started studying biology) but none of the local university offered a degree in marine biology (the only nearest way was to go over Australia for further my studies but I ain't that rich!)

So in the end, I ended up taking up a BSc and currently am working in a tertiary hospital doing research work

Cool idea!

Well, I'm majoring in psychology and I'm hoping to become an elementary school teacher. Unfortunately, here, education is not a major and you have to major in english, social studies, science, or math while getting certified in education to be able to teach after you get your bachelor's. So, I'm just doing psychology for now and am doing my education certification at the master's level, since I'd have to get a master's eventually anyway.

And when I was a kid, I had a bunch of ideas as to what I wanted to do. Construction worker and fire fighter were 2 from when I was very little. Then I moved onto co-pilot of a plane that youknowwho would pilot. Then I wanted to be a dental hygienist and youknowwho would be the dentist. Then I moved onto wanting to be a teacher. At one point it was art teacher, but I switched back to elementary school because I'd have a better chance of getting a job.

But when I was a junior and senior in high school, I kind of wanted to be a vet. But I couldn't get over the blood/surgery thing, so that didn't work out. Then I kind of wanted to be a pharmacist, but I really dislike chemistry and didn't want to take 6 years of it. So I went back to the teaching idea.

You could still be an art teacher, early childhood is all about the drawing and creativity and such!

At first I aspired to be a nurse, but then, I hated blood and needles so that was out! Today i realise Nurses have got it pretty hard, cleaning up puke and poo and dealing with the sick and disgusting.. I really admired the woman who helped me with mini Riley when he was born... I mean, YUCK!!!! If I wasnt' in so much pain, I reckon I would have fainted from the sight of it all! ahhh!!!

So ya, changed my mind and now I'm working on being a teacher. But before that I fluffed around with a fw other career paths;

Creative Writing
Journalism
Management
Commerce
Health and Fitness
Japanese language studies
and now... Bachelor of Education.. specialising in Special Needs

Plus I want to work with the kiddies and expand on my love of Drama! eek.. I still need to get my head around having to work with kids over 5.... I'm afwaid! lol

I decided years ago that while my heart belonged on the stage, my career would lay in the sciences- acting and singing make better hobbies than jobs, and I'm a dab hand in the lab. I kept an open mind until about 4 years ago, when I went to this Careers Fair. I spent about half an hour talking to a guy from the Institute of Biology, and later came to the conclusion that I wanted to take Biochemistry specialising in Genetics.

2 years later I made my A Level choices based on that, but was convinced on the first day to swap Drama for Physics by a certain teacher- the guy followed me around the school for 5 hours trying to convince me to change my mind, and eventually I listened. At the end of that first year, I realised something...Biology didn't grab me like Physics did, it didn't ignite the same kind of passion and didn't encourage me to go and do my own research. When I got a better grade in Physics than Biology over the summer, that just made up my mind. I dropped 3 years of preperation for Biochemistry and switched to Physics. While my teacher used me as his shining example I had to convince my mum and stepdad I knew what I was doing...that was "interesting"...

Anywho, I'm off to take MPhys Physics (undergraduate Master's degree) with an eye to follow that up with a PhD and then go into theoretical research- most likely in the area of general Cosmology. Think the stuff that Stephen Hawking and Roger Penrose look at, that's my aim. Then, in my mid to late forties, I think I'd like to take up a teaching post either in a secondary school or a university. Keeping a healthy amateur acting and singing thing going on along the sidelines, of course.

im reeeeally far from decision time for what i want to do, but i have a few ideas. i most want to be a dancer. it's my favorite thing to do, and having dance as my job would be fantastic. but that's not particularly likely to work out, so i need a fall-back choice. i want to do something with writing, i'd love to become a published author. i really like forensics, too. so basically, i have no idea.

Well, you've got plenty of time, Fawkes! If you want to be a dancer, try as hard as you can to make it work. :) You're an excellent dancer. But having a fall back plan is a good idea.

I'd also love to be a published author. That would be so cool. But unlikely to happen anytime soon since all my writing is fan fic. But I have fun doing that right now so I'm happy.

First I wanted to work at ToysRUs so that I could play with the toys, then I wanted to be a cashier because to me it looked like the only job that made money, then I wanted to be a fire-fighter, then a cow-girl, then a cop, then a pilot, then an astronaut, then a doctor, then a historian, then an archeologiust, then a vet, then a history teacher, then a researcher for NASA, then a meteoroligist, and finally I've pretty much settled on a paramedic. Nature and biology have been a constant throughout since I was about six. I've also wanted to be an author but I never finish anything.
At the moment I have it narrowed down to something in the aviation and space field, medical field, or historical field. Even though my dad insists that I would make a great statistician.
My heart and soul will forever be somewhere in the theatre, but my mind has to be reasonable. I'll probably end up following in my family's tradition of the medical field.
But I still have a few years before I need to start getting really serious.

Let's see. Up until I was about 11, joining the Marine Corps was the only thing I ever wanted to do. Now, it's still an option, but I'm probably veering towards something without physical activity.

If I had the choice, I'd love to be a published author. That is my lifetime dream. I've already finished a Novella, and I'm trying to find an editor. But the chances of me getting published are extremely slim, seeing as how I'm a minor. But I also look at astronomy, so might want to do something to do with space, but I don't have the commitment (or the experience) to become an astronaut, and being an astronomer is a lot more tedious than most people think. My two final choices would either be Lawyer, or Science teacher, preferrably Chemistry. Lawyer's an option, because I like arguing, and while I'm not very good at insulting (mainly because I don't swear, so all of my insults sound childish), I'm very good at finding loopholes, and asking questions that cover EVERYTHING (that is, when I want to). I simply love chemistry, but I also like little kids. So if I can't manage Chemistry teacher, then maybe a preschool or Kindergarden teacher.

So, that stacks up my options. I'm not sure what I'll choose, but I'll hopefully get one of them. Man, I need to make up my mind, I've only got four years of high school left.

everyone has big dreams!!!
well, for me, i'm kinda losing my drive in science field~ >_<
the next step for me to do, is to venture out to other fields (I guess)

Art, designing? It is my interest but a job in design area would require professional certifications and job would probably kill the interest~

Business? I have no idea the real deal behind it but it's probably the one with $$$ prospect

Tourism marketing? I'm outgoing~

Up till I was 10 I wanted to be a Post-Lady. I then saw one get attacked by a dog, so I changed and wanted to be a Photographer. O have now changed into wanting to work behind-the-scenes on films, theatre, music videos or live concerts.

In another year, I plan to head to the NZ Drama and Film School. Where I want to major in Performing Arts Management and also Entertainment Technology. I also want to do a Creative Technologies Degree majoring in Digital Media.

=] Big dreams for me.

But if not, I'd like to work in Print of Digital Advertising

When I was a kid, I wanted to be an astronaut, then later at school to work in microbiology (genetics and stuff) or in astrophysics (elementary particles, accelerators, …). In higher grades I dreamt of a carreer in journalism or linguistics. I ended up studying economics and a couple of foreign languages and worked as an export-import manager for a couple of years after graduation. Well, and now I'm a graphic designer and love it! :-)

I have been thinking alot recently... hence a couple more greying hairs LOL

I think I'm more or less decided that I am going to pursue a fresh start in design and arts. Afterall, I love drawing and designing stuff since young. Broccoli is doing something I like!

So I hope to save up more money so I could take up a Bachelor of Arts in design (aiming to be a graphics/advertising designer)... which will make me a double degree holder since my BSc has totally nothing to do with design (cant get any Master in arts...cr*p!)

I think that's a good choice, Choki! If there is smth you like to do and can do well, it's great to do it for a living, even if it means a new start!

I wonder what paul's ambitions/career were/are. I mean, he has BaO, but he can't be making much money off of it, if any at all.

Hmm, becoming a published author might be hard, but everybody I've heard from says, "That you got to go out and take it." Hmm, I like saying Hmm a lot. Anyway, back to subject. Writing for the school newspaper is actually the first thing I've ever done that included publishing. I'm considering asking the local newspaper if I can write an article for them or not. Anyway, I have the e-mails of two reporters up in Tokyo, one of which writes for Gamepro magazine.

I hope it all adds up to me being able to get a novel published. Also, I was told that publishers only read the first chapter, so if I can make that first chapter immaculate, then I can do a cruddy job for everything else  . I'm only joking. I would give an equal amount of T.L.C. to all of my books.

Hmm, I fell behind in NanoWrimo for about three days, but now I've caught up, so now I'm fine. I've almost got 11,000 words, when I started with 7 thousand words. I'm telling you guys this in this section because otherwise I'd be double posting. . Now, to stop this endless rambling, and get to work.

not exactly sure about the part where the publisher read the 1st chapter solely to make a decision to publish the novel, that's sound risky for the publisher hahaha
