Voldemort's name

Who do you like best and who could you definately live without? Will there be romance in the air for any of them and who will end up with who?

Voldemort's name

Postby DucksRMagical » Monday 29 October 2007 9:34:42pm

So I found my French to English dictionary the other day and Godric was looking at it and I told her to look up Vol. I already knew that mort means death.

Vol means flight. So Voldemort means 'Flight from Death' or 'Flight of Death'. That's so fitting!

I wonder if JKR thought of the name Voldemort first or Tom Marvolo Riddle first? I'm betting on Voldemort because it means something in French.

Interesting. I love how she plays with names. She has loads of them in the book. Here are my favourites.

Translations
1. Draco = Dragon
2. Narcissa = Narcisist
3. Dumbledore = Bumblebee
4. Reubius = ruby, red wine

References
1. Weasley - Weasle (she said she always like weasles)
2. Hedwig - a saint to took in and cared for orphans
3. Red hair - people with red hair were thought to be unlucky, but she always like the color

I love how she did
'Lord Voldemort'
And it is an anagram for
Tom Marvolo Riddle. :double jump:

Wow, I thought Voldemort was just a jumble of letters she put together. I knew Dumbledore meant something, I just didn't know what. I caught on to the Weasley name from the word go, and did you know that Potter was the last name of I think it was her childhood friends?

Yeah, there was a family who lived next to her when she was a kid with the last name 'Potter'.

that is so interesting! Let's see! names... it's so tough to decide on names for characters that doesn't sound like something else or too 'lyrical'.

Cornelius Fudge... I was looking for a book the other day called Inkheart.. by by...

and all I could think of was Cornelius Fudge.

but it's by Cornelia Funke! How wrapped in HP am I!

geeze....

haha Distortia!
Cornelia Fudge
Cornelius Funke

Wonder if she thought up Tom Marvolo Riddle, or Voldemort first ? Because, Voldemort means 'Flight of Death' so I suppose she did Voldemort first and added Lord when it fitted. ...Or not

yeah, i think she had a friend with the last name of potter, and sometimes he would drive up to her house in his ford anglia and it was like she was being "set free" from her problems i think?

I am not sure if that friend's last name was 'Potter' or not, but she did have a friend who would rescue her in his Ford Anglia whenever she got sick of being at home with her family.
