Duration of Spells?

Postby carsten » Wednesday 22 August 2007 8:08:16am

Sorry if this has been discussed before, but I have a question about spells. When DD petrifys Harry on the Astronomy Tower, the spell vanished with DD's death, right?

But what about all the other spells? The ones making up Hogwarts for example? The founders died long ago, but their stuff seems to work still? Or did they use a different kind of magic? Do only some spells wear out?

Confused

I think that it might just be spells on other people that stop wheen the caster dies.

Too bad it doesn't reverse the effects of Avada Kedavra and Crucio.

Yeah probably the founders were so powerful that their spell can last forever or just a really long time

I think that what really decides the matter is the difference between a spell and a charm. I think a charm would last until removed, but a spell would fade after the caster dies. Hence the continuation of the Fidelius charm after Dumbledore died.

A charm is a type of spell. a charm is temporary and dies with the cater but other spells will last longer. i also think that most types of spells have a good and evil.
Charms (good) cures (evil)
Jinxes (good) Hexes (evil)
now some dont have opposites like transfiguratin but im getting off topic.

I think some spells die with the caster and others don't it just depends on the type of spell

I forgot to adress this
Hence the continuation of the Fidelius charm after Dumbledore died.

the spell didnt realy last after dumbledor died everyone who was in on the secret became a secret keeper. i think this is because when they got in on the secret some of the magic went to them so it is threw this magic that the spell is still alive.

I'm sure I read somewhere that there are ancient charms and spells on objects. I'm sure Sirius's mother would have had some nasty enchantments on things, even in her death.

Eek... should this have a spoiiler alert on this? As in.. don't read if you haven't read or seen Half Blood Prince?

I think... me needs to get the re-read the books section going again.. at least for myself! Salemboy is far more knowledgeable than me, and I quote from Lucian from Underworld... "And that... will simply not do."

Distortia, if you think I'm that much more knowledgeable about HP than you, I'd suggest you don't debate with FortisUmbra. Feel free to debate with SirColvskey though. He's a HP knowledge wimp (I know this will come back to bite me someday).

And Distortia, anybody who manages to find this website probably already has read all of the HP books at least once. Nobody else cares to look this stuff up. There's no real reason to have spoiler-alert anymore. Besides, the movie's already out, so everybody either saw it, or heard about it from a friend.

Ms. Elsewhere you are right about very old spells lasting for long amounts of times on objects, but i don't think they are charms. I could be wrong but i am relatively sure that they are enchantments which, i think, is simply a different word for spell.
