Here's my first journal entry. it's a bit short cause I haven't had much time to be able to write it.
April 19, 2003, Day One of Trip
Dear Journal,
Well, at last today we went off across the great United States. I had to wake up early. And I’m talking EARLY. At four in the morning! I mean, come on, I need sleep you know. Well Alicia arrived half past, and we went off at five. The traffic was fast, hardly anyone was awake. Those lucky people.
We drove towards the woods and went left. We were on a trail, instead of a freeway. Wow, we’re certainly gonna get across the country quick. We traveled east, I made sure of that. Our first stop was Las Vegas.
I’m not gonna give a detailed description of my trip because it was boring. Absolutely boring; even when Alicia was there too. I’m sure she was bored. We got to Vegas at eight in the morning and my dad parked in front of a casino? Looks like someone wanted to gamble. Uh oh I’m starting to wonder if dad has a gambling problem…gee I wonder if that’s how we got the dog…
Well obviously we couldn’t get into the casino, so we went around looking for breakfast. Heh, I was pretty hungry. We stopped at a McDonald’s for breakfast. Luckily I brought my wallet. So I bought us breakfast. Alicia, you owe me one. Anyway, I’m still a bit hungry now, as I write about my day in the car, cause someone said their hashbrown was burnt and took mine’s to eat…
Dad was still gambling at the slots when we got back from breakfast. Here’s the dialogue of what happened then:
Me: DAD! What the h*** are you doing?
Dad: Wait up! I’m gonna win us a big one!
Alicia: Your dad sure is a gambler.
Me: Yeah, well, let’s get him out.
What happened? We waited till the coast was clear and we went in, and dragged him right out. Talk about a switch of positions. I was the dad, and dad was the kid.
Well we got going (dad seemed to forget about his own breakfast). We didn’t stop until we reached south Utah for lunch. It was a small town, and awfully strange, too. They dressed in weird robes and wore a lot of yellow. Hmm…religion? We stopped at a Hometown Buffet to eat. Boy, did I eat my money’s worth. Remember, cause someone had to take my hashbrown away.
When at last we went back on the road it was two. (We went shopping a bit) Well Colorado next. I think we were going to Denver. Anyway, dad went off the freeway and let me drive for a bit. Woo, glad I swerved to the left and barely missed that old lady by an inch. No, just kidding. Although I did run over a box on the road…
Dad took the wheel again, and we went back on the freeway. We stopped at five at Denver. The Mile High City, that’s right. My first time in Denver. Well, we’re gonna check in at a motel and sleep there for the night. Not much left to say, I suppose. All in all, it was a day in which I didn’t get breakfast and dad developed a gambling problem.
