Dumbledore related to Harry?

Postby Sacred Guardian » Tuesday 18 February 2003 11:54:59pm

I think that is some way Albus Dumbledore is related (by blood) to Harry Potter, and these are my reasons to back it up.

1) It is widely accepted, although not confirmed, that in book 5-7, it will be said that Harry is the heir to Godric Gryffindor, therefor, either James or Lily must have been as well, and it is accepted that it is probably James, seeing as how Voldemort wanted to kill James and Harry, not Lily. This explains Harry/Jame's relation to Godric, but not Dumbledore. In book one when Harry gets the invisiblity cloak from Dumbledore, it says that it was left to him shortly before he died. Why would James give the cloak to Dumbledore instead of a friend who could use it and give it to Harry, if James had no relation to Dumbledore.
2) While fighting the Basalisk in book 2, Harry pulls the sword of Godric Gryffindor out of the sorting hat. That proves a tie between Harry and Godric, and here is where Dumbledore fits in. How did the sword get to Harry, it got there from Dumbledore. Dumbledore had the sword already, it even had a stand in his office. Why would Dumbledore have the sword of Gryffindor, if he wasn't in some way related to him, it would be like Ron having the sword that Salazar Slytherin carried just lying around his room, it just doesn't make sense.
3) The only person to ever give Voldemort fear was Dumbledore. Why would he be afraid of Dumbledore if he wasn't Gryffindore's heir. Slytherin was confronted and forced to leave the school by Gryffindore because he was the only one that could stand up to him. Voldemort was afraid of him because he thought that an heir of Gryffindor was the only one who could defeat him. Though, he couldn't attack Hogwarts to get Dumbledore, not only because Dumbledore was there, but because of all of the enchantments and other teachers. This is why he went after James and Harry, they weren't protected other than by their treacherous secret keeper. He especially wanted to kill Harry and James because they were also heirs to Gryffindor. He had no reason to kill Lily and only did because he had to, not because he needed to like he did with James and Harry.

These are the reasons that i think that Harry (and James) are related to Dumbledore, through Godric Gryffindor.

Please, post any comments, questions, or rebutals.

wow...reason 3 is brilliant...excellet thinking...

im not convinced by 1 and 2 though...

first i'd say the sword doesnt belong to dumbledore it belongs to the school and remains in dumbledore's office along with things like the sorting hat and so on....theres probably other relics from the other 3 founders in there too that are'nt mentioned because they werent relevant.....

and as for the cloak...i dont know...theres lots of reasons it could have been left with dumbledore, dumbledore could have been a friend, he was certainly the head of the attempt to fight against voldemort and so most likely a very trusted person, quite reasonable that he might leave an invisibility cloak with dumbledore after say some kind of work using it

yes, the one about the cloak could be because Dumbledore was a friend, but i doubt it. If Dumbledore was a friend, James would have left it to
Sirius, because it said in the third book, that the two of them were almost inseperable, that they Rosmerta said that they could have been brothers, he also, i think would have given it to black b/c he didn't know that black would "betray him" (which he didn't). So i think that the cloak theory might pan out.

Somthin, i just realized. I think that James and Lily forsaw there own death. Why else would someone 1)give up an invisibility cloak (that would be stupid) 2) give it to Dumbledore to give to Harry, when Harry was James' son, if he didn't think that he was going to die? HMMMMMMMMMMMMMM??????? I wonder????????

hmmm. i don't know...

first of all, I am not convinced that Harry is Gryffindor's heir. It's too predictable in my mind. Secondly, it's quite explainable why Dumbledore wouold have Gryffindor's sword. He's Headmaster. Who's to say that the sword hasn't been in the school since Gryffindor died. Since Gryffindor wa a founder of the school, he probably left it there as part of his legacy, to be passed down from generation to generation of headmasters. And even if Dumbledore got the sword from a non-Hogwarts related way, there's still a million other reasons hwo it could've gotten to him... and, Dumbledore related to Gryffindor... I don't know. I don't know...

well, i hope you enjoyed my rebuttal... lol.

they definately knew voldemort was trying to kill them....thats why they got the secret keeper.....they also knew they had a spy in their midsts

so naturally theyd make arrangements becuase they dont know who the spy is do they....they pick a person they trust but its still better to make precautions just incase cos they cant be certain about anyone....

im guessing that the invisibility cloak isnt the only thing they left with someone...i bet they left other things but rather than give everything to one person they've spread it out in the hope that not all off it would get lost

Yeah, i don't think they would've left it with one person, either.

yeah, i know what you mean, it does seem a little far fetched, and i thought so when i first thought it up, but when you say the thing about the Potters know that Voldemort was after them, why would he specificaly be after them, and if he was after James and Lily, he wouldn't have asked Lily TWICE to let him kill Harry, he would have just killed her like he did James w/o asking

well

book 3:
' ... Fudge dropped his voice and proceeded in a sort of low rumble. 'Not many people are aware that the Potters knew You-Know-Who was after them. Dumbledore, who was of course working tirelessly against You-Know-Who, had a number of useful spies. One of them tipped him off, and he alerted James and Lily at once. He advised them to go into hiding. Well, of course, You-Know-Who wasn't an easy person to hide from. Dumbledore told them that their best chance was the Fidelius Charm.'

don't know but thats what it says.....its probably just inaccurate information from the spy who knew voldemort was after Potter and automatically assumed that meant he was after Lily aswell as James

Maybe dumbledore said "POtters" meaning James and HArry but no one would expect him to be after an infantso they assumed James and Lily. THe whole thing about Hary being the heir of gryffindor and him being related to Dumbledore makes sense but at the same time doesnt. I mean in the first book Dumbledore said the Dursleys were the only family harry had left and I sure if Harry had been related to him he would have taken him in. Dont you? I think James and Dumbledore were part of a secret society (THe order of the Phoenix perhaps) whos sole purpose was to rid the world of evil. Kind of like on the Mummy. almost..

It is a big possiblity that someone in the Potter family is related to a serious character. I hadn't thought of a connection between Dumbledore and the Potters but I had tried to connect the Potters with Voldemort. The fact that Voldemort doesn't attempt to kill Lilly untill she refuses to move out the way might be a clue. Though I can't connect Lilly or her family with any other magical connection other then Lilly herself. Still maybe in someway (which I wouldn't put past that sneaky J.K. Rowling) there is a connection and that maybe Voldemort didn't try to kill Lilly for the fact that she may be his great great uncle or something.

As far as the invisiblity cloak goes I doubt there is any connection with the fate of the Potters and the fact that they gave it away is pretty easy to explain. In Fantastic Beasts & Where To Find Them, a cheap looking little book, is a fantastic handbook to have to solve some of the clues in the Harry Potter books. Here is my point to show how explanitory the cloak passing is although it is only my theory.

Demiguise

M.O.M. Classification:XXXX <---- see book for explanation
The Demiguise is found in the far east, though only with great difficulty, for this beast is able to make itself invisible when threatened, and can be seen only by wizards skilled in it's capture.
The Demiguise is a peaceful herbovoures beast, something like a graceful ape in apperance, with large black, doeful eyes more often then not hidden by its hair. The whole body is covered with long, fine, silky, silvery hair. Demiguise pelts are highly valued as the hair may be spun into invisiblity cloaks.

Thus my theory that the Potters felt it unneccesary to have the invisiblity cloak since number one The Fidelius Charm made them completely invisible to everyone except their secret keeper. Number two if Voldemort's travels were so well known then it is quite possible he may have become skilled in capturing the Demiguise therefore making the invisibility cloak pretty much useless. As far as James Potter giving the invisibility cloak to Dumbledore it may just have been on the J.K. timeline as events that must take place inorder to keep the story running smoothly. Or maybe he just wanted to leave it to someone who could find it if they accidently misplaced it. In Chamber of Secrets Ron and Harry are hidden under the invisibility cloak inside Hagrid's cabin when Dumbledore and Cornelius Fudge come. Dumbledore see's them despite the cloak thus revealing that Dumbledore is also skilled in capturing the demiguise. I personally don't think the passing of the cloak is a relevant matter.

I just can't believe that Dumbledore could be related to Harry and not have told him already...

Dumbeldore ahs also said many times that the Dursleys are HYarry's only living relatives... So, unless Dumbledore is a Dursley...

2 and 3 are correct. but, i also have a theory:

Dumbledore states that Harry can reamin safe if he is in a relative's care. Therefore, according to Hagrid, Hogwarts is the safest place in the world. Maybe not just for stuff, but for Harry himself.
