Flower Names

Which one is your favorite so far. Are they getting even better as the characters develop over time?

Aha! Thanks you two!! I remember now! But when I read that I took that to mean Snape's mother.

Maybe I got that wrong?

I don't really know if she meant his mother... I rather thought of a woman/girl.

Oh, something else:

One of our internet correspondents wondered if Snape is going to fall in love.
JKR: (JKR laughs) Who on earth would want Snape in love with them? That’s a very horrible idea.

Snape

I also think she meant a woman. Who do you think could it be?

I remember in book V there was DD's memory of Bertha J... And she said something like "He hexed me because I said I saw him kissing Florence behind the greenhouses." I don't know if the memory is relevant and if it is at all related to S.

Personally, I think it was Narcissa.

I don't know why JK reacts like that sometimes. She also said Regulus is dead. He can't be, can he?

Ooh interesting - I missed that in OOTP - might check that out later. I like the idea of Narcissa but then again if Lucius knew Snape and Narcissa had a thing going on in the past, do you really think they would have been such great friends (this being mentioned somewhere along the lines)?

As for Regulas, this isn't the place to discuss it in depth but he probably stole the horcrux before the night that LV attacked at GH. He died apparently 3 days after he tried to back out is what we are told by Sirius.

I still think it could have been Lily. Cause I think it strange that she bothered so much to protect him and stuff when he obviously showed her so much hate.

Yeah but also didn't she try to get James and Sirius to stop making fun of him etc, but then when Snape was ungrateful, she changed her mind. It was something like that wasn't it?

I did not mean that Lucius knew. They kept it secret, of course. Imagine it went this far: They have a child together.

DD trusts him(S) but he wouldn't tell anybody why. What if Snape told him to prove he can love. As we all know DD believes in love and love only.

As for they being friends, well, they have to be. L and S were/are both DE and apart from that, N and S could have never married because of the pure-blood relationship thing.

I don't think it was her. Lily was kind of like Hermione. Friendly and just.

Yes, it's true that she protected him but only because J and S were really really nasty and as S offended her, she didn't bother about him any more. I think she just felt sorry for him, but definitely no love.

Must have been someone else. Would you agree?

I like this comparison with Hermione.

I think Lily thought of Snape the way Hermione thinks of Draco.

I agree that Lily probably just felt sorry for Snape. I remember when I was about 10 we had a boy at school who nobody liked and to whom many people were mean. I didn't like him much either, but I felt pity for him and tried to bahave friendly.

A lot of authors have a thing for flower names. Tolkein was one, there's quite a few references including Samwise Gamgee's daughter Eleanor, who is named after a flower in the books. I'd have to go back and double-check but I believe Eleanor (the flower) is to be found in Lothlorién. Been about a year since I read the books though, so this may be off slightly.

Actually I've just realised that the flower might not be Narcissa but in fact narcissus or narcissi. It's not exactly the same but pretty close.

Anyway:

Narcissus - a yellow, white or orange flower, similar to a daffodil

The colour yellow in flowers is normally associated with friendship

Narcissism - too much interest in and admiration for your own physical appearance and/or your own abilities

Well she did seem quite self absorbed at times
