Here's a strange thought... Maybe she was also being nice to Neville. Crazy!!! Ginny is actually willing to help her friends; who'd have thunk it.

thunk????   is that even a word...!

I think Ginny's character can be quite cold sometimes, to me, she is not as genuine as Hermione is.

I think she wanted to go to the ball, she was gutted that Harry asked Cho Chang and then shortly afterwards she said that she was going with Neville because "well...I wouldn't be able to go otherwise...I'm not in the fourth year". We don't know if Ginny then went to say to Neville that she would go with him because Harry didn't ask her.

I wouldn't put it past her.

So you're saying Harry chose a mercenary, cold person who uses people. That's lovely

Well yeah. Ginny only ever wanted Harry. I think that is clear. The other people she has dated have just been stop gaps as far as I am concerned. She has always believed that she would be with Harry in the end and this is her goal.

Whether you or I like it or not people do things to get other things.

If Ginny's relationships and actions over the years have all been part of one big elaborate plan to manipulate Harry into liking her then not only would that make Ginny a very cold and evil girl but it would also mean that she has some serious mental and emotional problems. I'm not talking about a schoolgirl crush here, I'm talking about full blown insanity.

I don't think that for one moment that JKR has written Ginny like that. I've always thought of Ginny as a cute, likable, caring, honest person. Yeah, she likes Harry. She liked him a lot in fact. But I don't think for one moment that Ginny is the sort of person who would trample all over people's feelings just to get what she wants. I think people are putting way too much weight in her feelings for Harry. In the first few years of Hogwarts, it was a crush. Then it was friendship. Then they breifly dated for a bit. I don't think that they were *in love* any more than Harry and Cho or Hermione and Krum were.

I get the impression that it was Neville that asked Ginny, not Ginny asking Neville in order to make Harry jelous. It's perfectly within reason to assume that Neville and Ginny just went to the ball as freinds.

Let's imagine for a moment what it would have looked like to watch Neville ask Ginny to the ball. He's probably tremblimg, tripping all over his words, staring at the ground and going red in the face. Neville is Ginny's freind. Of course she is going to say yes!

I think Snow was dumped by a girl at some point. It makes sense considering the weight of his accusations. Also, consider what Hermione told her "see other people so you will be calmer around Harry. If what you're suggesting is true, then that makes Hermione even more evil and mercenary since she gave Ginny the advice. Also, if I were Ginny and using people to get to Harry, I'd be watching him for any signs of interest; and Harry is not known for being subtle; If I were Ginny, I'd have dumped Dean the second I noticed Harry showing interest. Yet, teh girl stayed with him and only broke up with him after they were having problems

Tanuki, that personal remark about Snow was uncalled for. Disagreeing over a point is one thing, but there's no need for stuff like:

I think Snow was dumped by a girl at some point. It makes sense considering the weight of his accusations.

IMO, what this thread boils down to is: "is Ginny the sort of person who deliberatly hurts other people to get what she wants?" My answer would be a simple no.

just to clarify, I've never been dumped by a girl before. I am a totally heterosexual and married woman!

Think what you like about me, I just remember girls at my school used to do some pretty nasty things to people and acted similarly. I'm not saying I condone this sort of behaviour because I don't and before you ask I would never stoop so low to go out with someone else to make someone else jealous.

Nightcrawler, unfortunately Tanuki realises sometimes that their arguments become fruitless and don't end up getting them anywhere. I've noticed this before when Tanuki started resorting to insults to Thestral in another feed. I fully expected that Tanuki would resort to a personal insult to me as that's what Tanuki does.

...I thought you were a guy. Heh, whoops

How is getting dumped by a girl an insult? It happens to everyone. The fact that it makes people cynical is just a fact of nature. An insult would be calling you stupid or something. The fact that you grew up watching girl's do it still follows on my origional theory that you must not think much of teenage girls. Trust me, when I resort to insults, you know it. I am neither subtle, nor calm when upset

You still have not answered one of my previous queries. If Ginny was so mercenary as to do this, why would she have stayed with Dean so long, or shown such an interest in him. From the looks of things, she was with Dean an aweful lot, instead of focusing on Harry, like she could have been doing if this was her goal. She also stayed with him an aweful long time. If I had been Ginny, I would have been after Harry as soon as I broke up with my last boyfriend on the train, or I would have worked my way past Luna when Harry asked Luna to the christmas party. There were so many wasted opportunities that she could have taken, I find it hard to believe she was just into Dean to get to Harry
