ya, Hagrid definitly replied to uncle dursley with something along the lines of Harry has his own finacial means, or his parents have already provided him with an education.
as for the weasleys, Im sure with Arthors ministry connections they havea scholarship deal...I mean, its kinda likea community college. All applicable people who want to go are accepted.

Another question that I have been pondering. Throughout the books, the statement, he's been signed up for the school since birth, is used alot. Not only talking about Harry but also about Tom M. Riddle.

Does this mean, that a potential "squib" can be signed up to participate in a academic year at Hogwarts? Or is there some sort of magical way of ensuring that each child is magically potent and able to fullfill magic?

What are the theories for this one.

I wonder how owls find their letter receipatants. I suppose this is one of those mysteries that's only left to speculation. Could someone like send a letter to a Death Eater and then follow the owl.... :-)

Little hints like that make me think that there are other wizarding schools in Britain, but they just aren't as prestigious(sp?). Some of the other things include a quote from Ginny at the end of the second book about "wanting to go here since Bill got his letter" (the wording in the book made it sound like there was a big chance she wouldn't be able to go), and the fact that there are only 40 people in year (all evidence in the first few books points to this, though JKR seemed to change her mind halfway through the series) and with that few magical people, they'd be dwindling like the giants in no time (unless everyone was as prolific as the Weasley's).

I wonder about tuition though, because something about it should have been mentioned in the first letter. It would make more sense for tuition to be collected, but I just get this feeling that Hogwarts is so *something* that finances are beyond it, like the food was bought once and constantly refilled by magic like the wine in Hagrid's cabin.

Er, and way back to one of the first questions. The occupations of Order members. I've been led to believe somehow that James had a job that didn't pay so well, but it didn't matter because he had a huge inheritance from his parents that were indeed from a very old wizarding family. I can see Lily being a cute little housewife that turns into a daring vigilante by night (hey, what else could you call the Order?). I see Lupin doing odd, poorly paying jobs just to get by since he can't really get decent employment because of his condition. Sirius is a bit harder to place, my best bet is that he was able to not work because of Uncle Alphard's gold, but instead dedicate himself more fully to the Order. He's not a jobless person that lazes about, but instead is out trying to scr*w over his evil cousins and their equally evil compatriots.
