By the way, I stupidly didn't twig until last night that somewhere in the book Harry said something along the lines of

Well at least we'll only have to put up with him for a year as the DADA teachers only ever last that long.

Can't remember how he said but I do remember something like that. Because my head was so mixed up at the time with DD being dead I didn't even give that a second thought!

No, he knew for sure Voldemort wasnt dead after the first book when he tried to steal the stone.

The rest of them are just based on opinions and what SEEMS right, and you have already heard my opinions and without the book I cant really argue them any more than I already have. There is, of course, the possibility that DD didnt tell Snape that Voldemort was still around, but I find that highly unlikely for several reasons, which I will expand upon if you ask. In any case, if he is lieing about just one thing, especially about whether or not he believed Voldemort dead, it seems likely he is lieing about more.

Can I plead exhaustion on that totally inaccurate statement of mine?

You're right, of course. Dumbledore did know, and apparently he at least told Snape about what went on with Quirrell, and he would have had to tell all the staff about what happened with the Chamber probably (they'd wonder why all the students were still around).

Snowy, I also remember Harry mentioning the curse on DADA position at Hogwarts. I believe it was right after the start-of-term feast (or the next day after DADA now I think about it), where Harry jumped up and said "No!" when DD announced Snapes appointment.

Anyway, I think it can be no coincidence that DD wanted Snape out of the castle after the year was up, Im banking on the good ole "Snape is good" theory here.

yeah I agree with the Snape is good theory but I don't know how he's going to be able to prove it - surely someone else must know!!

Also in the chapter Voldemorts Request - doesn't DD say that no-one has been able to hold the DADA job since DD turned down LV's request. I think DD thought that LV put a curse on that job afterwards...

or DD knowing that the job was cursed gave the job to snape, seeing it as a final test of snape's loyalty, knowing that by the time the year was out snape will have been forced to reveal his true colours. it's just that i'm sure DD didn't expect his precious severus to actually be treacherous.

I thought Dumbledore gave Snape the job because Slughorn wanted to teach Potions and DD was desparate to have Slughorn with him (to retrieve that memory).

I'm lost at what to say about Snape. It can go both ways.

1) When Snape saw Dumbledore surrounded by deatheaters he might've realized that if he helps him right now they will both be killed, they were seriously outnumbered. He stared at DD, as sombody pointed out earlier, to silently communicate with him. The hatred in his face was due to the fact that DD was asking him to kill him. Snape only hurts Harry at the end when he is very persistant at not letting him go. Snape doesn't want to be called a coward because he knows how his action look in the eyes of others, and noone understands how hard it is for him. Just like Harry doesn't tell anything to proffessor McGonagall because DD instructed him not to, perhaps Snape was instructed by DD not to say that he is to survive and be next to Voldemort, so that Snape can assist Harry when it's he is close to Vold. By surviving Snape made sure that Harry was not hurt (by screaming at Death Eaters that Voldemort told them to leave him alone, and he saves Draco. I'm sure he will make some nice story of Draco's bravery to Vold.) I don't think Dumbledore would survive if Snape was killed....he looked like he needed some complex healing magic and was on his last breath....

2)Snape finally saw that if he betrays DD right now he won't be punished as DD is so weak. He is angry because DD has to die and he can't be a spy anymore and be of extra use to Voldemort. He does not touch Harry only because Voldemort instucted Death Eaters to leave Harry alone so he can finish him off himself. And we saw how angry Voldy gets when ppl don't follow his orders. Snape doesn't want to be called a coward because that's what he trully is and he tries to hide it with his cool exterior.

Maybe DD had foreseen the Lightning Struck Tower - remember Trelawny's prediction.

He might have also foreseen that Snape's loyalty would be questioned at some point and that in order to keep Snape's cover he would eventually have to return to the DE's. I can't believe DD was that blind to that happening.

I love that, snape had to do it because Dumbledore wanted him to remain a good spy... how good is a spy no one will listen to? It's more likely he just doesn't want to see Draco die... I wonder just how close he is to Draco

You know, after reading JKR's interview....I think Dumbledore never saw it coming.

When JKR was asked if Snape killed Dumbledore because he asked him to she said that she won't reveal that because she doesn't want to take away our hope...she just wanted to see our theories and such..so um...I'm guessing he went on and betrayed him ;_; Dubledore said that because he can make big mistakes. Its funny that he said that in this book prior to getting killed, I guess that was a huge hint from JKR for us.

Too bad, I was hoping there was another reason why DD trusted him...

What's the point of being a spy when you kill the person you're spying for? Even if he was thinking he could still spy for the Order, there's no WAY they're welcoming him back into the fold after he killed Dumbledore.

Well, one theory that someone posted is that DD and Snape made an unbreakable vow for Snape to listen to DD, and if so, you would need a person to bond it... and if so, that may be someone for Snape to report to...

That is of course cosidering he needs to report to someone, if he was there to say...free Harry should he be in a dire situation...well he's there.
