Voldemort's Immortality - how concrete is it?

Actually, the basilisk's fang can be used to destroy the diary because it has so much powerful magic itself. You would have to use a powerful magical item to destroy the other horcruxes (even a single item may be enough to do the job).

this is the only part of the story that makes me wonder if harrys magical abilities will leave him in trouble, if dumbledore can pretty much kill his own hand trying to destroy one of voldermorts horcruxes then harry will have problems.
i guess this might be the part of the story when hermione will come in with her over-protective nature and the fact that she's usually the one who finds out all the main details about stuff they have to do from the library!

I thought the magic was in the poison of the fang, whereas it could peirce through a diary i dont know about a metal locket, i still fancy its godrics sword

Same here, Godric's sword sounds a good bet. Maybe Dumbledore's hand was hurt so badly because Voldemort has put curses on his horcruxes so when destroyed, they release some ill intent? Dumbledore did say his reactions were getting slow, maybe Voldemort caught him out a little... though I don't know, if so, surely Dumbledore's hand would indicate to Voldemort that at least one of his horcruxes was gone?

I may be losing it, but didn't Dumbledore put the ring on? It was on his hand, and his arm "died" before Snape managed to get it off again. Or something like that...right?

I don't know if Dumbledore got injured trying to destroy the ring, I think he just said it had a "terrible curse" on it, so he might just have been trying to take it.

Yeah Dumbledore's arm was killed when he destroyed the horcrux in the ring. It's not in there any more.
How could Voldemort have even got his hands on Godric's Sword to put a horcrux in it. No, I think that particular weapon has been untouched, and I thikn that in some way Harry will have to use it against Voldemort in the final battle.

Yeah completely agree sorry thats what i ment with earlier post that the sword would be involved in the final battle not that it was a horcrux

it would be a big help to Harry, who couldn't even come close to competing with Voldemort at present. All of the founder's items seem to have magical powers attatched, so the sword would probably be a way to increase Harry's chances in a very short time.

Going back to the discussion of DD's arm dying like that, I have one little theory about it from real life...

You know how in the winter time doctors encourage the elderly and children to get flu vaccines because they are more likely to become infected by it than someone at the most healthy stages of life...well Dumbledore was close to 150 yrs old according to JKR so perhaps due to his old age, he is more likely to be injured by some of these curses on the Horcruxes than someone at Harry's age. I may be grasping here, but it's a remote possibility.

I think Gryffindor's sword will play a large role.

I think we may learn more about a serious rift between Salazar Slytherin and Godric Gryffindor in the past. And that Slytherin's last descendent will be killed by Gryffindor's...something.

I'm pretty sure JKR has said that Harry is not related to Gryffindor.

Whoever said it has to be a magical item to destroy a horcux or all of them - I'm inspired - totally agree and think this is very logical.

I'm not sure what that magical item will be though. Harry's already used the Gryffindor sword before and I wouldn't want it to become repetitive. But what else could it be. It's got to be something ancient, with history, strength and potency or if not potency something completely pure.

Harry is pure, I give you that but I still need some convincing arguments here.

What are our options?

I don't see how the Sorting Hat could do much, it is a hat.
But where it gets its info from is open to speculation.

I think (has this been mentioned in a book) that it was worn by one of the Founders.
