Betting your life on something is a little strong don't you think? Don't even go there. I reckon he was pleading with Snape to carry through a plan that he had in mind. That plan may have included his death but this is not absolute.
Maybe at this point it is important that Snape stay alive to continue a plan they've worked out... he would not have been able to follow this through if he dropped dead as a result of the unforgivable vow.
