though i personally don't see sirius coming back...there is a possibility, the fact that the veil was described as really old and located in the department of mysteries leaves the possibity that the ministry hadn't made it, but found out and was still working to figure it out completely (obviously they knew that people didn't come back when they fell through, and therefore could be using it for the death penalty) the veil is interesting, and i think we'll definately read more about it.

I somewhat agree. Only somewhat because I don't want to jump to conclusions. But what I REALLY want to know is why Sirius gave the two way mirror to Harry. I doubt JKR did it just to fullfill the story. She always has a meaning behind the simplest things. Or, yes it could just be something simple that has no importance in the future. (but i can't help but hope that Sirius...even though i'm pretty sure he's dead, will end up on the mirror later on).

It creates a sense of frustration and depression. He had a way to contact Sirius directly. He could have avoided all this trouble, and he ignored it. It makes things all the harder for Harry. That whole chapter was dedicated to Harry trying to reconcile Sirius' death. Don't tell me the conversation with Nick had some foreboding significance

I see what you're saying Tanuki. I had forgotten about the conversation between Harry and Sir Nick. I just can't help wondering...it's one of the times where you KNOW somethings not going to happen but you'd like to think it can anyway until you read the book.

I'm also the kind of person that doesn't except something in books until they actually tell you for certain that it's happend or I get to the end of the book and they never say so then I make my conclusion on what information I have. It's just how I read books. (Like Sirius' death). I can't help but have some (just a little) hope that he'll come back...yes even though everyone thinks he's dead and so do the characters in the book.

Sigmund Freud once said something I take to heart often. I think it might help a lot of people reading Harry Potter... "Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar."

Well, it is of significance when it's meant to create a feeling of frustration, isn't it?

I think Sirius's death, in the way JKR presented it, was merely this: absolutely senseless. If Harry had thought of the mirror, if he had practised occlumency, if Snape and Sirius hadn't had that lifelong grudge, if they had paid more attention to Kreacher...then Sirius would be alive. Just look at the way it happened, Sirius was stunned, hadn't expected it, was knocked off his feet and accidentally fell through the veil. Bellatrix hadn't even planned it. I believe the message JKR wanted to convey is that this is what deaths in war are like: No necessary and heroic sacrifice, no last words or promises, not even a good bye. I remember that in the discussions about who would die in OotP, it was generally believed that it couldn't be Sirius because first, his name would have to be cleared, and after all it seemed logical that after defeating Voldemort, Harry would go and live with Sirius, happily ever after. His death was a slap in the face, it's emotionally brutal and very, very cynical. The mirror was possibly the best device to achieve that feeling.

Ok, ok, now I'm seeing what you're saying. It just seems like there would be more to it then that. But I guess its simple and since I understand it now more powerful to me the reader. I think next week, I'm going to read it again...it'll probably make so much more sense.

Sometimes, the most simple answer is the right answer. People spend so much time looking for the hidden story that they forget to look at the facts right in front of them. Though the speculation is amusing

i know that sirius is completely dead and isn't going to come back to life, but i don't think that we have heard the last of him. he may speak to harry and give him advice in his dreams. it would just be a waste of a good parental character for harry to never hear from him again.

as for the mirror, i agree that it wont be seen in this coming book. if harry was going to repair it, he would have to gather up all the shards first, which the house elfs have probably already swept up. so no more mirror :(

I personally would be dissapointed if Sirius came back in any way. Its not that i don't like Sirius its just that would ruin the elment of death. It just wouldn't be interesting if everyone who died could still interact with the living.

Harry's parents were able to do it in the graveyard in GoF. I think that since Sirius died so close to the end of OotP, we're going to be getting some closure on it during HBP in some form (letter written to Harry before he died, Marauder's map, two way mirror), but after that, he's going to be gone forever.
