I read Hobitt and the triology and I love it. Hobitt isn kind of childish, but still very interesting and the other 3 are ... WOW!

I read Silmarillion a week ago and it really took me long to read it but I made it. It's interesting, but very hard to read.

Yeah, I'm a fan

I tried to get into the Lord of the Rings books a few summers ago, and I read The Hobbit and 3/4 of The Fellowship of the Ring. Then, school began again and I didn't have time to finish the triliogy. I tried to watch the movies, but each time it was incredibly late at night, so I fell asleep. However, this year in English Lit, my teacher need some curriculum for a three day period right before the november holidays. So he let us view the Two Towers film in class, and we had to analyse it and write papers and such. That made me a fan. I never really was into it, and now I have finished the novels and I can not wait for the third film!!!!!....but Harry Potter is still my favorite, sorry!

LOTR or HP

Postby Augusta Longbottom » Wednesday 17 December 2003 12:22:24am

I'm not sure I should be responding to this one since I haven't read the entire LOTR trilogy. I love LOTR (the movies) and think they are phenomonal (sp). I haven't been able to enjoy reading the books though. I have been in the first book forever...well, I couldn't even tell you where it is because I set it down never to be picked up again it seems. But each and every one of the HP books I read through in mere days as I got each of them. I think the HP books are easier reading and more enjoyable the first time around than the LOTR books.

well the Harry Potter books are children's books whereas Lord of the Rings is an adults book....and not much like the movies....it does progress slower than the movies, they had to cut out huge amounts of the books and characters such as tom bombadil, glorfindel...the barrow wights...

This is difficult to compare. I've read most of Tolkien books some years ago (before Harry Potter) and loved them. It's amazing how he was able to create all those languages, history, mythology... However, since that I've read Mervyn Peake who is very difficult to read, but I found it wonderful. Compared to this, Tolkien is too "perfect" - his characters aren't that deep, they're either good or bad (no one like Snape, maybe Gollum a bit...) and it's almost like a fairy tale. Harry Potter is first of all a book for children, so we can't really compare them. But personally, now I prefer HP to LOTR. Not that I don't like Tolkien anymore, his books are very, very good...

I think I prefer different series on different days....if I want to be scholarly, it's LoTR hands down, but if I'm just all together in the mood for some magic-happy frolicking...Oh, HP, Right here. *cough*

I have to say, that I enjoy reading LoTR a bit more sometimes, but I think it's based around not only the story, but the awe I feel for Tolkien himself, and the world he created...It still blows my mind.

It's really hard for me to compare them because to me its like theyre on different levels. Harry Potter is not necessarily a children's book, its an everyone's book. but i think LotR is not a kids book at all... in general more adults read them and get more out of them than kids.
But its more than that... Tolkein i think spent alot more time on LotR and i think they're better for it. JK has definitely spent tons of time on Harry Potter but she wrote them with an audience in mind. Tolkein wrote them as part of something bigger... middle earth is alot more than just the hobbit and LotR, its amazing how much time and thought Tolkein put into this stuff. i think thats why i like the trilogy better than Harry Potter-- because you can see the depth of tolkein's world and charcters....c'mon, the guy made up his own language!! you can just tell there's so much more to middle earth than whats on the page, and it makes you want to find out more about it!

But... i will say that i enjoy reading Harry Potter better because its easier and more fast paced. but i respect LotR more and still definitely love it. :D

Yeah..I mean, LotR is the third age of the world....he is supposed to have started writing the fourth age but quit because it was getting too dark....

there are sooo many books to get if you are really into Tolkien, I mean, he has a map of his world, and there is the Silmarillion and Christopher Tolkien has written quite a few books on the history too.....

Yes, Silmarillion is very interesting, kind of a Middle Earth's mythology and legends. And Gandalf comes out interestingly in it.

I'm sure there is a thread somewhere that highlights the similarities between lotr and hp but i cant find it at the moment so i thought i should just post here.
I started reading the felowship of the ring today and i noticed that there is a mention of squibs in lotr
But there was also a generous distribution of of squibs, crackers, fountains...."
i dont know if JK would have read Lotr and just taken it from there, or if it was just a big coincidece that they both decided on the same word.
