Harry drawn to the dark side?

Who do you like best and who could you definately live without? Will there be romance in the air for any of them and who will end up with who?

Harry drawn to the dark side?

Postby Mistress Siana » Thursday 26 August 2004 2:52:28am

First of all, I'm not trying to say that Harry will join Voldemort or become his successor or what. I'm just wondering about this:

Harry has shown an increasing tendency to wrath and anger. In the first books, his actions were merely motivated by "good" feelings, for example the need to help his friends or to prevent a crime, whereas now, his thoughts are dominated by anger and even hatred. Also, he more and more separates from his friends. In the first books, he told them almost everything, while now he choses to be alone with his problems. What I mean is: Harry is far from being a careless boy. Not that he ever was, but he is becoming more and more depressed and angry. He's lost Sirius and even feels misunderstood by Dumbledore, and that just at a moment when he's to play a major part in a cold and bloody war. He will lose more people that are close to him, and he himself will have to take lives.
In his DADA training, he might come in contact with curses he can't cope with. He's already tried to use Cruciatus and he might as well be forced to use Avada Kedavra for defense. Is that confused and angry boy really strong enough to handle that? The dark arts are powerful, you really don't need to have evil intentions to get lost in them. Remember that Crouch Sr. was said to have become just as evil as the Death Eaters in his attempts to fight them. I think it might happen to Harry as well, if only temporarily.

Yes, I don't think that his friends will let him go over to the dark side. He's not alone to fight, he has people who are there to help him even if sometimes he prefers to be on his own and feels misunderstood. It's understandable that he's angry, but e.g. when he tried Cruciatus, he failed, he didn't have that much hatred in him (to want really hurt someone and enjoy it). He may not be strong enough, but he isn't alone and he'll be helped.

But would they be able to help him? As Hagrid says, if a wizard joins the dark side, nothing and noone matters to him anymore...But honestly, I really cannot picture the Harry Potter series ending with Harry on the dark side. I think Harry being kinda tempted and then saved by his friends would make a good story :D

okay okay maybe the books wont end on harry on the dark side - but i'd like him contemplating it once at least....makes him more interesting and angst ridden...like a normal teenager

I, too, hope that at least the subject of temptation isn't left out. If not Harry, then somebody else, maybe Hermione. Her skills are extraordinary and she constantly has to protect her friends. Her curses will also have to get darker, I think. But if anything of that is to happen, I'm pretty sure that going over to the dark side WILL NOT mean joining Voldemort.

It has some reason behind it, but JKR has said repeatedly that HP has nothing to do with Star Wars. The whole going to the dark side is so Star Warsesque, and would totally contradict the whole anti-star wars claims that JKR has been making.

I'd hate to come off as bursting a bubble of going to the dark side but it does seem to be a lot like Star Wars. Also it contradicts DD's passage saying that there is more than just "good" and bad" people in the world. We all have our indiscretions

I can't imagine it happening, not to Harry and not to Hermione. Harry is a strong guy, and can even resist the imperius curse. What would make him go over to the dark side? He would rather die than do that.

i think i would stand somewhere in the middle cos even though a bit of me wants to see harry go evil for a bit (i love a bad ass!! ;) ) i think that the characterisation of harry so far has been that he has a an inherent goodness. his goodness is so strong that the forces of darkness are repelled. like voldemort couldn't touch harry cos he has so much love in him. the failed cruicatius (spelt sooo wrong) curse cos harry has 'righteous anger' not hatred. and the suggestion that harry will harness the power of that weird room of light thing in the minstry. the room of love or whatever is way stronger than dark magic. and harry possesses this love in abundance so i don't think he'll be turned to the dark side.

i think he will have to be tempted to show that he is human and make him more realistic than a perfect hero figure but i think he'll be stronger. and also the whole harry falls for the dark side and then at the eleventh hour realises his folly and returns to the good guys thing is a bit predictable don't you think? not very JKR i think she can show the strengths and weaknesses of the human condition without resorting to formulaic plotlines.

she's shown his angsty teen stage in OotP ( i didn't really like it thought it was a bit contrived for my tastes) so i don't think he needs to turn evil to show he's a normal teenager.

As Yoda would say,

>Fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, and hate leads to suffering.

Now I don't know if JKR is a Star Wars fan, but he was scared in the first two books or so, got angry in four and five, now in these last two books he could very well go to the dark side, and cause suffering on his friends/family/world

i seem to have an uncanny ability to apply Star Wars anywhere.......

:) :) :) :) :) :) just a though

think HARRY POTTER HARRY POTTER. not star wars!! also i get the impression that JKR isn't a star wars fan and she has always emphatically denied any connections made to star wars. sorry luke and darth fans but i don't think harry will go to the dark side. once again slowly H-A-R-R-Y-P-O-T-T-E-R N-O-T-S-T-A-R-W-A-R-S

lols (star wars)

Well, the thing is - JKR is not found of dark side. I mean she was extremely surprised that kids were dressed up as Draco. So she doesn't think that "dark characters" are likable at all, I doubt that she would make Harry less of a hero in the eyes of younger readers.

I don't think Harry will become dark. But a very realistic thign is that a hero who lives through these things is not a very fun person to know. They've seen too much death and suffering to be able to just shrug it off and be the life of the party. This is what's happening to Harry.

Also, you can't use Aveda Kadaveda in self defense or the defence of others. You have to use a lot of magic and you have to use it intentionally. This means wanting to kill honestly. This is why the cruatious curse failed. Harry just doesn't have it in him to use these curses

i dont reckon harry will go over, but i reckon that unless something drastic happens in book 6, he will get depressed. he has just realised that he is a marked man, and he feels isolated. this is really depressing for him, but it happened before. remember when he thought he was a weapon, and that LV was using him? i reckon that he will start isolating himself again, and then someone will bring him back. this is going to make him really happy, and really against the dark side. so, he won't go over
