What if Harry had been sorted into Slytherin?

What would have happened if The Sorting Hat had insisted on sorting Harry into Slytherin? Or what if Harry had become friends with Draco Malfoy instead of Ron during their first journey on the Hogwarts Express? Wander into alternative Harry Potter universes here.

What if Harry had been sorted into Slytherin?

Postby zledm007 » Sunday 6 July 2003 1:22:00am

To start things off, i figured we'd start at the begining, well, yoiu know, cause that's usually the best place to start. So what if harry had been sorted into slytherine instead of gryffendor? (sp?) would he still be friends w/ ron hermy etc. or would he be friends w/ draco and his gang? would he be on the quittich team, (slytherin's of course) or would he be a slytherine outcast? just a few tings to ponder..

I dont think he would be best friends with Ron, but i think they would acknowledge each other cos they met before the sorting. I guess it could go two ways - he is a powerful wizard so he could be really evil but i think he has too much goodness (partly given from his mother) for this to happen.

I reckon he would be an outcast. The others would be really happy to have him to start with but they would soon get annoyed with him i reckon. As for Hermione he only really became friends with her after the sorting but maybe some things are ment to be no matter what house he was put in????

I think that eventually he would NOT be friends with Ron and Hermoine. Because Ron hates Slytherins and all. And Im sure that Potter would be friends with Draco (who would occasionally make fun of him suffering through the potion class. And Draco would keep making sure Harry knows that HE is the boss.

Harry prob. would get invited to Malfoys house and would be recruited to work for Voldie with his (Harry's) memorys modified.

I guess it could go either way. I mean, before the sorting, Harry pretty much told Draco that he planed on hanging around with Ron and pretty much dismissed all possibilities of hanging around with Draco from that moment on. So, if Harry were to be sorted into Slytherin, he would possibly still be friends with Ron, though not as close. As I'm imagining that inter-house friendships are a it more difficult to pull off!

On the other hand, environment does do a lot in determining who your friends are. Similarly, were Harry to be spending all his time withthe Slytherins, then a lot of that would probably rub off on him, causing him to dismiss any thoughts of being friendly with Ron.

I guess it could have gone either way.

Perhaps Harry would have been good for Slytherin...someone posted how it seems that all the Slytherins are evil, but it seems, from what the Sorting Hat, that Slytherin House is supposedly known for its cunning and such (not sure how Crabbe and Goyle fit in with that, but oh well  ). Perhaps Harry would have been a powerful wizard for Slytherin, but not evil...showing that one can be cunning and not always rule-abiding, without being evil or cruel...perhaps Harry would have added some dimensions to Slytherin House and possibly helped to make it more accessible to other Houses...just a thought...I may post more later on this, provided I don't get black-balled! :o

Oh wow, you are right!!!

May be he would become a great good wizard in SLytherin.... Im sure that he would find some friends there. Or pehaps he would rely less on his friends and spend more time on perfecting his skills...

In Gryffindor - he spends a lot of his time having fun and doing other teenage activities......but in SLytherin, with being in a tense and competative environment, he would spend more of his time learning stuff.

He would be like a boy that would not talk too much but be extremely powerfull.

Also, I doubt that he would be good friends with Hermone and Ron - because!! - He would only hear the Slythering point of view. he would miss all of the good things they were doing - and see their weekness (which Im sure slytherins talk about nonstop).

Lol, fear not, Mint. It'll come back soon and then the two of you will be happily re-united...:D

Anyway, I doubt that Harry would be able to 'turn around' Slytherin, as it would have been him up against the whole of the house, and as far as I can tell, there isn't a single one of them that is pro-Harry! Similarly, I don't find it likely that this would have changed were he to be in the house. It's more plausible that he would have succumbed to the peer pressure of being a Slytherin, and the more I think of it, I think he'd probably have cut his ties to Ron and gone on being friendly with Draco and the rest. Eh, but it'd make for quite a different book!

you know Mint, your description of the Slytherine harry sounds a lot like a young Tom Riddle. this brings up an interesting point, just how similar the two of them are aside from the connection they share via the scar. but that's something for another forum i suppose. (oh, the ideas just keep coming... 8) ) But anyway, Mint, I think you are very right, harry would probably have done very well in Slytherine and learned a lot more than he has thus far, and perfected his skills much better, and turned out to be a better or more powerful (however you want to put it) wizard than he will as he is in Gryfandor. The question remains, however, what would he do w/ these better learned powers, how would he harness them? would he use them to defeat voldemort, or would he join forces him and rule the world? (an interesting idea for the common room just came upon me 8-) )

Just a thought... I wonder how Snape would react if Harry was in his House? Would he still hate Harry as much as ever? Probably... since he hated harry from the start, and it wouldn't make a difference whether he's in Gryffindor or Slytherine. And perhaps he'll make life even more difficult for Harry since he's under the direct control of Snape...

:o Yeah it does!!!! woooow!!!! u right!!!

That would totally make sence! Remember that its the decisions that Harry makes are the once that distinguish him from the path Voldie took. Otherwise they are very similar (backrounds, lots of powers and soon )

*runs off to Slytherin to comment on discovery*

June - I think Snape would still hate him deep down, he would make Malfoy look better and such - but he would definitely not torture Harry that much.

I'm not sure. Did Snape hate Harry off the bat? Or was it after he had been sorted? Because I only remember something being mentioned about Snape after Harry was sorted, not before.

That said, though, Snape's conflict definitely goes back much farther than when they first encountered at Hogwarts. Back to when he went to school sith Harry's father and mother, so I find it unlikely that Snape would just forget about that and be all chummy with Harry.

And on a side note, chummy is a really fun word.

i don't think Harry woupld have been pally with Draco, ROn represents the family harry never knew. Harry knows what its like to be bullied so i don't thik he would do it. i think he'd be the outcast and still try to be friends with ron ( although interhouse friendships would be very hard, especially in first year)

LOL, indeed.

Well, if Harry would be friends with Ron, being in Slytherin and all, imagine what kind of outcast he would be? His whole house would hate him!!!!!

maybe he could be the one able to change that ! I believe he would stay friends with R and H, would have to cope with D, but he could get others to be his friends since Draco wouldn't be the only leader in slytherin house anymore..
