As mentioned above, Harrys feelings for Sirius overwhelm LV and they broke apart.
Later, in DD's office, Dumbledoree is fiddling with one of his instruments that emits smoke. DD observes that there were TWO. I read this as DD knowing that there were TWO snakes, one of Harry's and one of DDs.
At this point, DD can look at Harry without hiding his feelings for the boy because Harry is NOT under the influence of LV. This was the turning point.
That's how I remember it.
Interesting as I wonder what the significance of the snake scene with Harry and DD is, however the problem with that post is that your scenes are in the wrong order. The snake seperation scene happens just after Harry sees Arthur get hurt, not at the end.
There are also a few confusing points about your post; when are they both in snake form? In the mind battle? Therefore what inclines you to think this from the way that scene played out...I just imagined it as a battle of wills.
Also, the two snakes, surely you mean one was Harry and the other LV?
