Neville

Postby Mistress Siana » Saturday 26 April 2003 8:04:06pm

Hi!!
Somewhere on a newsgroup, i've heard quite an interesting theory:
Most people believe that Neville does not have great magic power. But some scenes, like the first flying lesson, where Neville's broom went highwire whereas most of the other kids had difficulties making it fly at all, imply that Neville has in fact a great potential of power, only that he doesn't know how to use it. I think that could be possible, for both his parents where aurors and thus great wizards...the theory also says that he could be under some kind of forgetting curse...or that he might have been affected by the torture as well...any thoughts?

hrmm, whatever it was must have been done to him at a very early age. Because he's said that all of him family thought that he was a squib for ages. Do we know how old he was when his parents were captured and tortured?

But I like the idea of it though!

good point there..
so, since harry was 1 at the time, and he and neville are in the same year, neville couldn't have been more than about 2yrs old when it happened, which would explain why his family thought that he might not have been a wizard... hrmmmmmmmmmmmmm

i luv that theory

although.....i think hes perfectly capable of controlling the magic, its just the fear that triggers the magic that he cant control.....perhaps the forgetfullness and the fear he shows is because hes insecure because of what happened to his parents...

cos i mean, hes scared of the broom so it goes mad, hes scared of falling so he bounces, hes scared of snape so he melts his cauldron and mucks up his potions....

Hm...the fact that Neville tends to forget almost everything would support that theory...it could be a negative after-effect.

This theory totally makes sence. And after reading book 4 and finding out about his parents - it went through my mind that he may be very capable and powerful after all - he is just traumatized.

Yeah, I totally support this theory - at least it would be cool if its true.

(PS:
the theory also says that he could be under some kind of forgetting curse

12321 - u say my memory is just like Neville's......thats the reason :(
....... )

Neville is traumatized, we notice that after the class of DADA when the learn the cruciatus curse, but at Herbolgy Neville is quite good, maye because is smooth and quiet class.

Yes, maybe because Prof Sprout isn't ivery intimidating, like Spane or McGonogall... I like this theory alot!!!

But, I can't see it coming to a head in the 5th book... maybe 6th or 7th???

I absolutely love this theory! I'd really appreciate it if there was more in Neville than meets one's eye. Just imagine Neville's the one to finally destroy Voldemort...*G*

I definitely think that there's a lot more to Neville than we already know. He's progressed a lot throughout the books and has become less static so it makes sense for him to keep gathering this hidden magical potential.
We do know that he's fiercly loyal to Harry and the rest of his friends (like when he stood up to Malfoy even though he knew he had no chance of doing any damage,) so I wouldn't be surprised if he's the one that stands up to Voldemort in hopes of protecting Harry from any danger.
Another thought. We know that someone dies in OotP, perhaps Neville? It makes sense if he's trying to prove himself and save Harry.

We know that a "special" fan will die, I doesn't sound like Neville to me, but who knows.
We will have to wait to see in what way Neville develops in the next books, but at least we are almost sure he won't pass to the Dark Side, because what the DE did to his parents.

No, I don't think that it will be Neville that dies either. It just seems like his character has so much left to give...

I do think that he will get all his memory/power/whatever back and help Harry stand up to Voldie, in the 7th book or something~! Not yet though!!!
