Character Names

Who do you like best and who could you definately live without? Will there be romance in the air for any of them and who will end up with who?

Character Names

Postby DucksRMagical » Saturday 28 April 2007 1:17:08pm

Most of you know that I live in the U.S.A. A lot of the HP characters have names I've never heard of before. Like Hermione, Draco, Severus, etc. So are these names common in the U.K.? Or did JKR just want to use unique names?

Many of the names used in the books are used becaues of JKR's love of languages.... they have latin roots and stuff, like Draco is used because it means dragon, and that's a reflection of the character. So many of the names used in the books are just like that. Sirius for example... is the name of the dog star.

But there are just as many names like Hermione and Ronald and they're of course real names. Names that swing in and out of fashion like all names do.

Oh, that's cool! The names seem to fit the characters really well. I've never heard of the name Hermione before, but I like it!

Well yes, if you've ever wondered why the names fit some of the characters so well, that's why. The names for many of them were chosen deliberately based on the characteristics of the characters.

As explained before Draco and Severus aren't really names. Hermione is, but it's an older name, I hadn't come across it before Harry Potter but then I saw someone on TV called Hermione recently so it must be a real name. Quite a few of the names that JK has used seem to be traditional names or names that you would expect older people to have such as Ronald and Percy. I think it adds to the magic somehow. :)

Severus in Latin means strict and Minerva wize one. It's also the Latin name for Athena, the Greek goddess of wisdom (or something like that). All of her spells and potions are in Latin. Like felix felicis-fortunate man.

Actually I had heard the name many times before in cartoons. When I was little there were quite a bunch of characters named Hermione in cartoons.

Hermione is also a name of a character from Shakespeare's "Winter's Tale".

Minerva wize one. It's also the Latin name for Athena, the Greek goddess of wisdom (or something like that).

Athena is the Goddess of War and Battle Straticy/wisdom. Just so you know in the future. :D

There is a difference though between the Greek Athena and the Roman Minerva, the Roman Gods were only based on ideas of the Greek Gods, they aren't exactly the same.

Hermione has become a really popular name in the UK since the first book came out.
