Okay, I went a searching because I am currently rereading book 5 for the umpteenth time. In chapter 37 (p. 842) it says:
"He chose the boy he thought most likely to be a danger to him," said Dumbledore. "And notice this Harry.
He chose, not the pureblood (which, according to his creed, is the only kind of wizard worth being or knowing), but the half-blood, like himself.
Nikki, could you point out more clearly whereabouts in ch 37 you read that Nevilles mom was a witch and his dad a muggle so I can see for myself. I have completely missed that and it would contradict what Dumbledore says about Neville being a pureblood.
but i thought that when DD was telling harry about the prophecy he said how significant it was that he instead of choosing the pureblood, neville. he attacked and therefore chose harry, the half-blood....hmmm to the bookshelf!!!!!
You're right thestral...I posted that very paragraph above (ch 37, p. 842)-- when Harry is insisting to Dumbledore that perhaps Voldemort chose the wrong child, Dumbledore explains to him how Vm had chosen Harry over Neville, and in that he clearly mentions that Neville is the pure-blood.
