Using magic outside Hogwarts

Postby mkfan64 » Wednesday 30 October 2002 4:02:25pm

Hi, I'm new here so perhaps this question has been answered before, but in the first book, Petunia is talking about how when Lily came home from Hogwarts on holidays that she would be turning teacups into rats and doing magic and how can that be when students are not allowed to practice magic outside of Hogwarts? Didn't she get in trouble with the M of M? Or is this another slight oversight by JK?

Other thoughts...

Now isn't Ginny/the Weasley's indebted to Harry for saving Ginny's life in C o S, such as Wormtail is indebted to him for sparing his life in P of A?
Also ITA that Harry is a Gryffindor (the sword out of the sorting hat, Godric's Hollow) and that is *partly* why Voldemort wants him dead - because then he could take over Hogwarts without any opposition. We may find out if Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff have any heirs also.
I also think that Lily was working on developing a charm to repel the Avada Kadavra curse (her wand was good for charm work) and that is why Harry survived the attack - she used it on him at the last minute before she died - it says it was her love for him was the reason he survived, but no one is exactly positive on that.

my opinion on the magic outside of hogwarts is that at one point the rules weren't all that enforced or that the mofm was busy with other things (such as catching voldy)

p.s-(is an mk fan also-sub-zero ownzors my soxors)

I'm not sure what your question is but mk fan merely means I am an avid Michelle Kwan(the ice skater) fan!

MKFan... yay! I used to be the oldest here (I think) I'm 25, and I say you are never too old to be a true HP Fan! It's nice to see a parent out there who is not paranoid about the so-called "witchcraft" in the movies and books! :D

I have no children yet, but I certainly don't plan on banning Harry from their lives. :)

I don't know. I sort of agree with Chocobo. With them trying to catch Voldy, M of M had other things to worry about.

Well, i think it was probably an exxageration, Mrs Duresly trying to make Lily sound more stupid than she really was... i dunno...

yeah i agree with Wedge.....

i think aunt petunia exagerates that alot......i mean maybe lily talked about stuff and over the years aunt petunia has exagerated it in her head to prove to herself that lily really was a freak and that her parents were wrong to choose lily as their favourite....so after how many years it is since lily and aunt petunia were at school aunt petunia now remembers her exagerated version as being the truth because shes told herself its true so often

ok...of course the other version that rules were lax could also work quite well or maybe its a combination of both....lily did small magic like making a feather float or turning a beetle into a button (that they maybe would ignore because voldemort is far more important than a few missing beatles) and then aunt petunia has exagerated it all in her mind to prove lily is a freak and now remembers her exagerated version of teapots etc as the truth.....

True, but I don't think that M of M catches everything. Like Sonkem said, they're not going to care about a feather floating, or missing a few beetles. Also, Ron and Hermione did magic before they even went to Hogwarts. So did Fred and george, but letters from M of M were never mentioned.

The Weasley twins also use magic outside of Hogwarts and I am sure other kids play Quidditch during the summer holidays...

no but i think the magic u rnt allowed to do is spells with wands or potions.....

broomsticks doesnt seem to matter....

and as for being allowed to do it on the hogwarts express...when would aunt petunia see lily doing that??

the point is aunt petunia was meant to have seen lily doing spells in the school holidays...
