Will Harry make it to adulthood?

Postby TMAUndomiel » Saturday 28 June 2003 12:22:13am

I know how Dumbledore talked about how either Harry or Voldemort would die, and today I saw a blurb in the newspaper where JKR said "Harry might not make it to adulthood" Codswallop! People are already mad (or at least I am) about her going and offing Sirius, so I don't think she would do something as stupid as to kill Harry that quickly...she better not for her sake or I'm gonna jinx her...

actually its near the end of July, which is the middle of break, but it all comes down to the same thing.

i am seriously opposed to JK killing off Harry. im not mad about sirius, i mean, we all knew someone was going to die, so im just sad about sirius. but id be mad about Harry!!!!! (of course, id be sad, too) JK can't kill him off, he's the hero! i know, that doesn't stop some authors, but JK just can't!! He's Harry Potter for goodness sake, it would ruin too many people if she did.

I too am desperately hoping that Rowling threw that line in as a red herring or something, to throw us off-track, so that we won't get set in thinking that Harry will survive after Book 7. After all, she does want to keep us guessing, and I would expect that if she really wants to kill of Harry... she would have kept quiet about it, wouldn't she? To give everyone a big shock... a twist in the tale or something, which she's good at. At least, I hope so... she always does the unexpected, and I'm clinging on to the hope that Harry will survive past the fifth book...

Well, if she's not planning on writing any books beyond Book 7 anyway, what does it matter if he's alive or dead? We won't be reading about him either way... ;)

yes, but....the knowledge that the reason JK isn't writing abt Harry anymore because he DIED would be horrible! i simply cannot see JK killing off Harry because she didn't want to write about him anymore. in recent interviews, we've seen that she is very attached to Harry herself, and that there is a lot of her in Harry. if it was horrible to write sirius's death, a character that was only introduced in the 3rd book, imagine what it would be like to write Harry's death?! i just don't think she owuld that to herself, or to us.

I don't think JKR'll let Harry die. She said in an interview on the BBC thursday before the 21st of June, and she probably has mentioned it earlier, that the last word of book 7 will be 'scar'. Now, I can't imagine that it would be anyone else's scar, and it also doesn't seem right that somebody will touch his scar while he's laying in his coffin, I think it will be Harry who touches his scar, of thinks about it.

I think JKR wants to give brings up positive things in us, so showing that evil things can be beaten is a good way of doing that!

Errr... I don't think "scar" as the last word can give us any reassurances on Harry's mortality... it could be in a sentence as "Harry Potter would always be remembered as the boy with a scar" or something like that...

--> Still crossing fingers and hoping Rowling wouldn't inflict Harry's death on us, or on herself either...

Yeah, okay, hadn't thought about something like that. Yet it seems so strange to end a series revolving around a boy, with the dead of that boy. I think the ending will be much more open, so that fans like us, can dream for ourselfes what wonderful thing Harry and the other will do or become.

how bout this for an ending, this is assuming harry lives, which i surely hope he does, but anyway...

<and his triumph will forever be marked, by the dissapearence of his scar>

now would that be funky or what!?

Nice one.

Or 'and they were always remembered of those horrible times because of Harry's scar.'

 Don't worry Harry can't die yet, not until book 7th. no main character will die in the middle. They always save it for the last pa  rt.

It's a hard call . . . on the one hand, I agree with you . . . especially for the young kids reading this series, to kill off the title character would be devastating (not to say it wouldn't be for adults as well!). On the other hand, I don't think everything will be all neatly wrapped up and happy either . . . that would be cliched and with JKR being rather serious about the deaths being realistic and serious, I don't think she'd end her series on a predictable note. :-?

It's hard to say what she'll do, but if I had to wager a guess, I'd go with gecko's idea that while we'll have some sense of resolution (she did say, in an interview, we'd have that about the characters!), I think she'll also leave it somewhat open-ended. JMHO. :D
