Socks

Postby Athena Appleton » Friday 23 July 2004 3:20:28pm

I've been wondering why there are so many sock references in the books.

The most obvious sock reference is in Chamber of Secrets, when Dobby is freed by being handed a sock. In this case, the sock definately represents freedom. I also believe that Dumbledore's sock reference when he's talking to Harry in P/SS (after Harry goes alone to the Mirror of Erised), Dumbledore, while not being entirely honest, uses the socks comment to represent freedom. In a way, Dumbledore seems sad and almost regretful that he's in the position he's in: having to watch Harry go through what he goes through, being responsible for so many people, etc. When Dumbledore says that he wants socks, but people insist on giving him another book, I think Dumbledore really has a longing to just be a normal wizard, not "the only wizard Voldemort ever feared", therefore obliging him to be Headmaster at Hogwarts and bear the weight of the responsibility so heavily on his shoulders.

Naturally, there are other sock references. When Dobby gives Harry his socks for Christmas, those seem to be used only as a means to let Crouch/Moody find out that Harry is friends with Dobby the house-elf, which we find out Crouch/Moody uses to his advantage when he lets Dobby overhear him talking to McGonagall, knowing that Dobby will go straight to Harry.

Also, when Harry puts the Sneakoscope in Uncle Vernon's old sock to keep from being bothered by it (because, as we find out later, Peter Pettigrew is in the room with Harry), that is actually a clue that Peter's (or somebody's) around and up to no good.

That's all I got for now, but there are more, I just can't remember them... :-)

Nifty topic.

I honestly have no idea, but other things are also important, such as colors, sights, and sounds. It may be just an interest of the author.

lol. i like this topic, Athena. i think that you are right on most accounts. however, i highly doubt that the thing that will banish Voldy will be the HBP's gym socks. lol. not that you said that, but it's funny nonetheless. anyway, i totally agree with you, but i also agree with what Deedra was saying about JKR just liking socks for some odd reason.

There are a few other so-called running bits I've noticed... the only ones I've really been able to turn into a meaning is the socks. Here are some others I've noticed:

Long extremities (particularly fingers and noses)

Fingernails and talons

Certain colors (usually associated with a house, a person or a mood. Green, in general, seems to represent evil. However, there are exceptions to this - McGonagall wears green, and Harry/Lily's eyes. Maroon seems to go with Ron. Hagrid and Hermione's signature color seems to be brown. Silver is a running theme, too - Wormtail's hand, Dumbledore's hair, the veelas and Fleur had silvery hair, silvery Patronuses...)

Certain numbers (particularly 12 and 13). If you count the number of times "a dozen" has been mentioned, it would blow you away. Also, in chapter 13 of just about every one of the books, a MAJOR hint or character major to the top storyline shows up. This is the chapter in which the trio learn about Nicholas Flamel in P/SS, when Harry is taken into the diary's memory in CoS, when Sirius Black broke into Gryffindor Tower using Neville's list of passwords in PoA, when we get our first good look at "Mad-Eye Moody" in GoF, and when Harry has the detention from Hades with Umbridge in OotP. Also, it's worth noting that the "double 13", or Chapter 26, is when there is another major turn in the story of OotP. Harry's interview with Rita Skeeter appears then, and the atmosphere of the school seems to go back to Harry's favor. It's also the chapter in which Harry "witnesses" the confrontation between Voldemort and Avery and finds out that Rookwood has told Voldemort where to get the weapon. This leads to the confrontation between Snape and Harry in which Snape realizes for sure that Harry is "seeing" through Voldemort.

(If I remember correctly):

the number on Harry's vault number adds up to 12. And The chapter 12's have important info in them.

 I'm sure it's very interesting, but I've tried it, and with my computer, going through the site at all just takes too long.

Deedra, the vault number is only mentioned in the movies. Any significance is either circumstantial or something that the screenwriter came up with with Rowling.

I apologize for being pessimistic on the subject, but it's all much to complicated for anything to come of it. Sure, perhaps a dozen is mentioned a lot of times. Authors (and poets/songwriters) overuse words too much. I went through a phase where the word 'just' was used at least 6-7 times in every one of my songs.

However, I am also optismistic about this. A part of me wants you guys to find something about this, so by all means, keep debating it! I love a good theory.

Yeah, I kinda go back and forth on this one. I think some of the things have significance (like socks, for example) but I don't think that things like, say, the long fingers mean much in particular...

And of the things I do think might have significance, I don't think it always means something... or the same thing, for that matter. Socks definately meant something different in the Dobby story than they did in the Sneakoscope thing. I look at it more as a heads-up kind of thing...

 no problem... besides, I've heard that people have wondered if the screenwriter either got the tip from Rowling to do that, or at least okayed it with her.

I really do think socks have a greater purpose...what as to what simply baffles me!

In my opinion not wearing socks is freedom...just feeling the grass or carpet between my toes makes me feel free! But yet again socks protect our feet from the cold and from sharp objects and from blister causing shoes...hmmm
