Hermione

Postby ADreamAbove » Sunday 20 June 2004 2:04:19pm

I realize Hermione is the feminine form of Hermes... But does anyone know if J.K.R. is big on Shakespeare references at all? There's a character in The Winters Tale named Hermione that, if Rowling had her in mind while crafting Granger, would give rise to a certain degree of concern... Shakespeare's Hermione is a clever and intelligent queen of Sicilia (note Granger's dark hair/eyes) who is imprisoned exclusively on her husband's allegations of infidelity, and even her well-crafted, eloquent appeal to reason cannot help prove her innocence. In the play, she seems to die, only to be revealed as otherwise at the end. With all the buzz about impending character deaths.... think we should be concerned?

In an interview with Lindsey Fraser in "Conversations with JK Rowling," Rowling does say that Hermione's name was taken from the character in The Winter's Tale.

Good spot!

She's also said on a few occasions that she finds it odd that while people worry about Ron and Harry, no one seems to worry about the safety of Hermione. Seems like a hint that we should start wondering about the fate of our favorite bushy-haired bookworm to me.

So you mean...
*mimicking Ron in divination*
that she is going to die or at least that's what the other believed until the very end, when she comes back alive...
Maybe that is happening in Book 7? J.K.R did mentioned that none of the trio will die before Book 6...

 I'm ashamed to say I've never read The Winter's Tale so I have no idea really what happens to Hermione... guess I should get to it.

It's really a good read... but then, I'm quite a geek, and consider pretty much all classic literature good reads... but I think, particularly with the Harry Potter tie, that you'd enjoy it.

I hope Hermione doesn't die... but, maybe it already happened, when she was petrified in CoS?

Well, generally I'm the resident classic literature nut around here (go check out my literature quiz in The Three Broomsticks), but I just haven't ever gotton around to reading it. I will now that you mentioned this, though...

About Hermione and CoS... oooo, that's an idea... I really have no idea.

Also, in OotP, one death eater casted an unknown spell at Hermione as she fell unconsicous and Harry thought that she was dead for a fleet second.

Harry also thought she might be dead in book five in the department of mysteries. Maybe its going to be a running theme.

But the books are full of false heros and villains. Hermonie is an excellent book-learned witch. But she's a miserable failure when it comes to confronting the dark arts directly. She fell quickly in the battle of the department of mysteries. Neville Longbottom outlasted her by quite a bit - and he's not a good student. Indeed, Harry should reconsider his picks of Dumbledore's Army to actually fight - Hermoine is a bad pick; Neville is a good one.

As would I!!! It would be a shame to have her die. Of the trio, I think she might be my favorite. Lets get rid of the Ron guy.......

i think that Ron's the most obvious to die as the other two seem to want futures outside Hogwarts, whereas Ron doesn't really get memtiones! justy picks what harry does

I kind of agree with what you're saying, but not entirely... I think Harry may have learned (or if he didn't, he should have) that the people he might not immediately consider to be worthy to have around in a fight might actually be the best. After all, in the beginning, he wouldn't choose Neville, Luna or Ginny if he had to pick three people out of the DA to join him, Ron and Hermione. But those three kept their heads better than both Hermione and Ron.

Hermione isn't useless, though. Even though she may not be good in a battle sense, she very much understands people, and she has extraordinary problem solving skills and is good with strategy. That may be just as important as being good in battle.

In truth, every one of the students have their strong points. Neville, as we're coming to find out, is made of tougher stuff than we originally thought, and he seems to have a real hunger to prove himself. Luna, for some reason, can live with her head in the clouds, but be grounded enough to be reasonable in hectic situations. Ginny has sheer power and is stubborn, making her a tough opponent to knock out completely. Hermione, as I said before, understands people and is excellent at the problem-solving. Ron is incredibly loyal, and while he's no great shakes, you couldn't want a better second. When you put them all together and they're working as a team, that's one force to be reckoned with.

About one of the trio dying... I would be sad to see any of them go... But, oddly enough, my least favorite character of the three is Harry himself. I feel like I really understand Hermione, and Ron (in the books especially) cracks me up. Sometimes I just feel like, if I were face-to-face with Harry, I would have to hold my tongue to keep from telling him to go throw himself a pity party and get it over with...

yeah they do make one mega team!

i too would most like to see harry die, but i can't help thinking that a faithful side kick will bite the dust first, giving harry the insentive to finish Voldermort off once and for all!!

I got totally lost in that post, Nobby, took me, like, five minutes to understand what you said... something about biting the bucket or kicking the dust...

I'm a moron.
