Sirius did die for Harry in a way; he went to try to rescue Harry just like Harry went on the belief he was going to rescue Sirius. Plot-wise, Sirius may have had to die to prevent his vindication as a loyal OOTP member. This has little effect except that under the Potter's will and Harry's wishes, Harry would become a ward of Sirius and be forever free of the Dursleys.

Indeed, the whole battle of the Department of Mysteries was not fought in vain - it alerted the magical world at large that Voldemort had returned. It also resulted in the unmasking and capture of many death eaters. On the other side, the death eaters won't be underestimating Harry again - he fought most of them to a draw and wiped the baby voice away from Bellatrix once she realized just how dangerous he was. Then again, he probably IS a match for most of them. The Death Eaters had to learn that the hard way.

I think he is dead, as much as I'm irrationally clinging to hope for the alternative... but what I keep coming back to is:

1) why develop someone so extravagantly, if only to annihilate them in such an anticlimatic way?

2) Sirius is the only person, besides Harry, to be referenced in a book title. To me, that indicates extreme import, but maybe I'm just wishful thinking.

We can only hope... :crying:

That´s what i think too...i mean finally harry has an adult person to speak with and to trust and sirius was like some sort of father to him and then after two years he dies...

Obviously the Dursleys are more important to the story than Sirius. Life would have been much easier for Harry without them, but now he is bound to go to Privet Drive again. I am curious how this unfolds.

If Evans was related to Harry, he'd be related to Dudley in the same way. Wouldn't Dudley know if he was beating up another one of his cousins?

Not if Petunia turned from her entire family before Dudley was even born... I think it's really likely that she did. She wasn't just appalled by Lily's difference, she was angry and resentful that her parents exhaulted Lily because of that difference.

That, along with the fact that Petunia wanted to make it quite clear that she wants nothing to do with anything magical, leads me to believe that even though she may know about this Evans thing, she certainly wouldn't have told Dudley about it, because she wouldn't want him playing with that sort of riffraff.

And besides, we know that Petunia is quite capable of keeping secrets.

well, as long as they explain the veil, she can kill off Sirius. that's the only part of the whole affair that angers me. if she had explained it, it would be good. but, she didn't. which not only makes us mad, but makes her a good author, because now we have to get the next book to figure it out.

 Yeah, kinda stinks how that works out, don't it?

I think what bothers us the most is that Rowling is writing a story about a clearly fictional world, but there are so many elements of real life. In real life, things don't have to be explained on our timetable. She gives it just enough mystery to where it's actually believable. I mean, how anticlimactic (sp?) would it be if Harry had a full understanding of the veil before Sirius passed through it?

I think she explained it in a certain way.

'yes,it was rather horrible,'said Luna conversationally.'I still fell very sad about it sometimes. But I've still got Dad.And anyway,it's not as though I'll never see Mum again,is it?'
'Er-isn't it?'said Harry uncertainly
She shook her head in disbelief.
'Oh, come on.You heard them, just behind the veil, didn't you?'..............

I belive Luna on this one.I actually think that they're all behind the veil...
