Ok, to prevent things from getting too heated we should keep the subject light...how about:

"Celebrities are rolemodels and should not smoke nor drink in public."

so we take the side of what we believe in? That could result in some unequal sides.

Yeah, i was wondering the same thing...i think that in debate clubs the teams are just randomly made and you have to defend the opinion of the team (one is in favour the other against) even if it's not your own opninion.
I'm not sure though...i've never been to/in a debate club  , but this is how we did it during philosphy lessons

Plep's right...the person organising the debate should split the teams evenly and then guve one for and one against...then you debate, even if it's not your belief. The good debators are able to see from both perspectives.

well, we should make sure that some topics shouldn't be allowed, because not only may someone get offended, but a huge flame war may start, and that's what's destroyed many forums.

so we just have to be very careful about the topics we choose.

I agree with you, TDM. Things must keep Clean (as I know they'll be) and peple shouldn't be offended... Choose carefully the topic.

Here are a couple of ideas for debate topics:

I am from New York state and these items have come under a lot of debate in the news:

1. Seat belt law. It is now illegeal to NOT wear a seatbelt. The fine is $70 (this I have on personal experience)

2. Hands Free Law. It is now illegeal to talk on your cell phone in your car without hands free equipment.

3. No Smoking Law. It is now illegeal to smoke inside any building in NY Stae including bars, resturants, sports clubs and arenas.

What do you all think of these ideas for debate?

Lol, the above rules sound so much alike to Singapore's law, except for that no smoking in building rule but there are designated smoking area outside the air-conditioned areas.

Can I join in the debate team? :)

that makes 14.I vote for the non-smoking law( :D ).And i don't care which side i take.we must invent an universal system to choose the teams or something.even if we choose sides-the numbers don't matter, right.i can take on anyone, having such a big mouth

Yes, I think the smoking one would be the best one to have a debate about.

ok, i'll go with the smoking one too

Btw, will there also be one or more discussion leaders? so someone who doesn't get involved in the discussion, but makes sure everything stays "fair".

This discussion leader could also make the teams
