Math is essential to all kinds of science, including the magical arts. It is needed to plot the position of the planets in astronomy and divination (and is probably used in arthimency), and proper proportions for potions. It would also be used for mixtures of ingredients for feeding and healing of magical creatures, and probably many more functions as well.
