Should there even BE a fourth movie?

Postby Hermione » Monday 5 January 2004 10:46:26pm

I'm rather skeptical about how the fourth movie will turn out. I mean, there're so many special effects that need to be taken care of, it's either going to be a flop or a hit. Also, the book is really long and they're probably going to have to cut out large chunks of it. What do you think about this?

I agree with you. There are so many details that they must take care and the book is too long...

Good points, but I think it doesn't make much sense to do only a few movies and not the remainder of them...what the point to start it and never finish it.

I do agree that this is going to be a difficult one to pull off no matter how they do it. Ya, I suspect they will cut out a many large chunks. I am rereading this one now and with each chapter I have been considering this -- whether this or that could be omitted and ugh, it's killing me to think of how they could really slaughter it! I mean, they really could make a big mess of it. You know, cutting out things that lead to something important down the road but won't make sense once all the movies are done.

I bet they'll do a lot of the great special effects stuff (you know, to lure the viewers in) but they'll cut out stuff that is critical to the story line and the story itself will be lacking.

I am also afraid that the 4th movie could be ruined. However I am also worried about the 3rd movie---after seeing the trailer w/ the singing chorus and... i don't know. And the next director says he'll have to follow the darker path that Cuaron (3rd movie director) has taken. BUT, I am pretty sure that the same writer, who I think has done a decent job of putting the books into scripts so far, will be working on the 4th as well, so he will probably do well to keep the main plot intact(plus JKR works closely w/ him she said in the interview of the two of them). The HUGE amount of special effects may be end up too over the top, or they will fall short of expectations. There is a very thin line between creating a close model of what the readers have envisioned in their minds ... and a disaster.

I ma sure they will cut out a lot of character developing part...perhaps the arguement Ron and Harry had. So I am guessing the main storyline will be about Triwizard and Voldemort's return.
Judging from the box-office response to the 1st two movies, I expected PoA to be a hit, which this will spun another sequel...and maybe GoF: The movie will have to prove itself as another blockbuster before OotP: The movie can take place.
So GoF: The movie will be the deciding factor since it is gonna be the longest of all HP movies. A major uproar will be expected if GoF proves to be a disaster...
pardon me if I sound nonsensical

i'm concerned about how fast the characters are growing up. i mean between the first two movies, all of the characters have really grown up. daniel radcliffe's voice was a lot deeper. also, in the books, ron just keeps growing but the character playing ron in the movies hasnt grown all that much. i really dont want to see the characters be replaced.

The fourth movie will really be different to all of us. We'll be expecting new actors, praying for a great film and important details (to us). I hope the 4th film will be in 2 parts because the book is too big and details are too important. I'll rather watch 2 films HP and GOF than 1 and lame.

But you also have to take into consideration that funding is a big issue. Making a two movie of a one book would potentially mean more money...and if the third movie flops...and they're undertaking a two part goblet of fire...what then???
Besides, forcing young actors to stay in one place for a long time is hard enough, imagine making them stay there twice as long.
If they did one movie, sure, it would be pretty long...and they would have to leave stuff out. but in all seriousness, it's not really a logical conclusion is it?
Not attacking, just pondering.

I think that the 4th movie will be on a similar level as the other ones with regards leaving parts out. i mean they all have done, and like has been suggested Lord of the Rings turned out brilliantly with leaving out a lot of the books.
I think that as a film it will turn out well, but in all honesty most people dont scrutinise over every little detail and will apprectiate it as a good film. Whereas we'll be getting annoyed at all the little details, which while relevant to us, most people wont care too much about.

good point Violet. You're right, most people won't be so intent upon seeing every detail. Before I'd seen the HP movies several people I know insisted they (the movies) were done exactly to a T based on the books. (HA!) They are probably the norm....people just hoping to see an entertaining movie and not so concerned about it being an accurate portrayal of the books.

Yup that's true...even I don't like to sit in a movie full of too many sub-plot. Afterall, watching a movie and reading a book are two totally different things. We definitely can't expect Warner Bros to come out with a exact version of GoF without changing a few ideas. I'm sure they are entitled to change the plot as deem fit. Cho and Cedric didn't play a huge part in PoA, so they are removed from PoA the movie.

well i mean, i don't think that the special effects will be an issue, i mean look at what movie people have done recently. the basalisk in CoS, the Balrog in FotR, every other second of the LotR series, the two newer star wars movies (while lacking much in plot had exceptional special effects), and many other movies, that won't be a problem. and about whether they will make it, they will, many cast members have been signed to contracts for 7 movies, so, they kind of have to unless warner bros. like goes out of business or there is another funding issue

i think the movies will do fine. Like choki said, reading a book and watching a movie are two different things.

with all the special effect snow availble, i think they will find a way to make even the characters look like the ages in the books.

by the way, on imdb.com it says that OotP will be released in 2007.

i don't think we should worry about the actors too much. consider how long it will take them to make all seven movies... if poa comes out in 2004, and we give the other films at least two years (just guessing here, guys, these obviously aren't real numbers  )... that means gof in 2006, ootp in 2008, movie six in 2010 and movie seven in 2012. if the actors are 14-15 now, by the time the other movies come out they'll be in their mid-twenties. most movies made nowadays about people in their teens have actors in their twenties in them, i guess hollywood just likes them to look older.

this is considering, of course, that the same actors stick with the movies. i don't think they will, even if they do make all the movies... would you give up ten years of your life just making harry potter movies? :???:
