Will Harry die?

Postby Broccoli » Friday 4 October 2002 2:14:11pm

Some people are sure he is going to die at the end... So that JK doesn't have to write "HP and the Midlife Crisis" :) What do you think?

:( I'm sorry I had to say yes, not because I want Harry to die, but because most of the time, that is how authors get rid of characters they aren't going to write about anymore. Remember the demise of Sherlock Holmes in the "Final Problem"? Well, actually, that is a bad example, because ppl complained about Doyle killing him, so he brought him back. I don't think Rowling will be writing anymore about Harry after book 7. it really is heartbreaking,

He'll die because of what we said, if he lives JK will have to make more books about it, and she doesnt want that :-P however, itll probably sound better if he dies at the end.

Oh no, I am sure the people in this forum don't want Harry to die, but JK won't listen to us if she has decided to kill him :(
As for me, I really don't know the answer. On the one hand, it is still a children's book and the good is supposed to defeat the evil at the end. On the other hand, we have already seen deaths and things will surely get darker and darker...

I don't think he'll die because I don't think JK could bear to kill him. I've heard that writers get really emotional when they write death and I think I read that JK gets sad killing of any of the charachters. If he doesn't die she won't have to keep on writing more books because she could just put a last chapter in the 7th book that says what happens to everyone.

A good point there about this last chapter! This could really solve the problem, but who knows, if Harry really has to die or not... :???:

I read an interview with JK Rowling some months ago in which she said something like: "What makes you think that Harry will be alive at the end of the books?" (sorry, I can't remember the exact quote).
I froze in horror! I had never thought she could make Harry die!
I really hope she won't, it would be too sad; after all, it's still mainly a book for children! :(

Then some other website said that Ron may die in the next book. I had another heart attack! I really hope that, if someone really has to die in the fifth book, as everybody say, it won't be a close friend of Harry's. That boy is already too unlucky, he doesn't deserve this! :(

I don't think Harry will die in this series (though, like us all, he will die eventually).

That's not to say he won't lose a great deal and suffer, but I don't think J.K. will kill him off. I can't really explain why I feel that way...one long post you're saved from!

When I read "The Ancient Mariner", a piece of British literature, I will say one quote has stuck with me and for some reason, when I read this thread, I thought of it:

A sadder, but wiser man he rose the morrow morn.

I feel, at the end of the HP series, that'll accurately describe Harry . . .

The Rime of the Ancient Mariner?! I love that poem! It's so incredibly well written and just a beautiful piece of poetry in every aspect. And Coleridge is the man.

Anyway, I voted no. I suppose he could, but I think it would be a much better ending if it was left off not so much as a cliffhanger, but something like Bumblebee just posted. Where there is a conclusion, but a lot of it is left up to the reader. And if he were to die, there wouldn't be any hope of more books or sequels! Which there always will be if he makes it through. ;)
