Chapter 3
“Argh, not again,” the blonde with a distinctive dumpling shaped buns on her head lamented as she hurried past the gate of Juuban High. The bell that signalled the end of the first lesson had just rung. “This is the fifth time this month already,” Usagi lamented, running up a flight of stairs leading to Class 1-1. The thought of having a dreadful detention was enough to make the rest of her day miserable. Taking a deep breath, she entered her classroom, hanging her head low in expectation of a scolding. But oddly enough, there were no noise except for the usual rumbling of chairs and tables.
“Usagi-chan,” said a familiar voice. She looked up to see a pair of dark green eyes. “You’re lucky, our maths teacher is sick today.”
“Mako-chan! Phew, I thought I’m a goner,” Usagi said with a small relief. At least, she could try to ally with the class representative to mark her present and escaped the detention.
The good news: Ami was the class representative and one of Usagi’s best friend as well as a fellow senshi.
The bad news: Ami was extremely partial.
Before Usagi could make her way to the seated Ami, the door flew opened as a middle-aged man with greying hair walked into the classroom.
“Ahem,” Professor Kurazaki coughed, “I believe it is time for your history lesson. Turn to page 57.” Usagi and the others scrambled back to their seats as he began to write on the board. Halfway through the lesson, nearly everyone in the class fell into a deep stupor, except for Ami who was paying close attention to the professor as he mentioned the important events happening in the Meiji era. Makoto, being a responsible student, could barely keep her mind focused, lest alone Usagi. She had already fallen asleep as Professor Kurazaki continued to read in his deep, droning voice.
“Usagi-chan, it’s break time now,” said Minako as she nudged the sleeping girl gently.
“Huh, what?” Usagi opened her eyes and surveyed the classroom. It was empty except for the trio crowding around her desk.
“Let’s go for some snacks. My head still hurts from the double period history lesson,” said Makoto, shaking her head.
“Ok,’ said both Usagi and Minako together. Nothing would excite them more than food…well other than handsome boys that is. The foursome walked towards the canteen, talking and laughing along the way. As they made their way towards their usual bench, they overheard a conversation between a group of girls.
“Did you see him? He was smiling at me!” said a girl excitedly.
“He’s so handsome and cute. I heard that he is going to be a student here,” the second girl added.
“I can’t believe I actually saw him!” screamed the third girl and those three broke into a bout of mad giggles.
“I wonder why is everybody acting so strangely today?” Ami said as she looked around the canteen. It was crowded than usual with small groups of students, mainly girls, chatting and giggling.
“Girls gossiping and giggling doesn’t seem too unusual but that is definitely weird!” Minako added, pointing to a corner where a couple of boys were whispering and grinning.
“Maybe it is about some new idols?” Makoto replied, before putting a mouthful of curry rice in her mouth.
“Perhaps,” Usagi said as she continued to stuff herself with snacks and occasionally, Makoto’s curry rice.
“New idols that made such a craze? It’s been a while since Three Lights created such turbulence! And I haven’t heard of anyone being so famous recently,” said Minako confidently. The rest nodded their heads in agreement.
“What’s the plan this afternoon?” asked Makoto.
“I’m having my volleyball practice,” Minako answered.
“I’ll be in the library, reading up for more details on what Professor Kurazaki just talked about,” said Ami. The rest looked at her in disbelief. Mizuno Ami had indeed lived up to her name as the top student of Juuban High and probably Japan.
“What about you, Usagi-chan?” asked Makoto. Usagi had almost forgotten about her detention until Makoto’s question reminded her.
“Ami-chan,” Usagi said with a pleading voice, “Please mark me present during the maths lesson, I don’t want to attend detention...please...”
“Usagi-chan, I’m so sorry, I just handed the attendance book to our form teacher before the break.” Ami said apologetically. Upon hearing this, Usagi slumped back to her seat crestfallen. She hated detention.
“Why would Ms Ebikawa want the attendance book so early? I thought it is always given to her at the end of the day,” Minako asked curiously.
“She said something about some changes she need to make before her lesson,” Ami responded.
“We are having her lesson later?”
“Yes, Usagi-chan, in fact it is right after the break.”
“Then, she will know, right? About me being late...Argh, I’m dead!”
“She wouldn’t know,” Ami answered.
“Huh? Why?” asked a confused Makoto.
“Because I marked Usagi present, not late.” It took quite a while for the rest of the senshi to fully realise what Ami had just said.
“That’s not true, you’re joking,” Minako laughed.
“No, I didn’t.”
“Are you feeling alright?” asked Makoto as she placed her hand over Ami’s forehead, checking her temperature. “You’re not running a fever.” The three turned their heads away from the table and whispered to each other in secrecy.
“Hmmm, there is something fishy,” said Minako.
“Why would Ami-chan help Usagi-chan that way?” Makoto questioned.
“That’s right, she wouldn’t help Usagi-chan!” said Minako as she nodded.
“Hey, I’m here too!” Usagi replied, apparently annoyed by her friends’ comments.
“Ahem,” Ami coughed in an attempt to catch her friends’ attention. The rest turned around and stared at her. “I helped Usagi-chan because I don’t want her to spend the afternoon sleeping in the detention classroom.” Minako and Makoto stared at Usagi, with their mouths wide open. They could not believe Usagi actually slept during detention.
“Ahahaha,” Usagi laughed weakly, embarrassed by the fact. “Thanks Ami-chan, you saved my life,” she continued.
“Well, you’re not exactly going to get off free without any punishment, Usagi-chan,” said Ami, “You shall stay with me in the library. I shall revise with you!”
“Today as well?”
“Yes!” said Ami in a firm tone. She had been revising with them twice a week, for the past few weeks. She was determined to pull up Usagi’s grades before she would be made to stay back for a year. Usagi couldn’t argue with Ami because she knew Ami had her best interest for her.
“Ok, I understand,” Usagi answered before scooping the last spoonful of Makoto’s curry rice.
After finishing their food, they made their way slowly to their classroom with a few minutes to spare before the next bell.
“I’m so full,” Usagi said as she rubbed her tummy.
“That’s because you ate half of my food!” Makoto replied.
“Mako-chan, sorry,” Usagi smiled sheepishly, turning her head towards Makoto’s direction. Makoto’s back was facing the school carpark. As Usagi looked up, she saw a familiar car parked within the school compound.
“Hey, that car over there,” she paused, pointing towards a black car. “Doesn’t that look like Haruka’s car?”
“Haruka’s car? What is she doing here?” Minako asked.
“That black car is just a model same as Haruka’s, it might be someone else’s car. Besides, Haruka-san has a lot of cars, she might already sold off that black car of hers,” Ami answered.
“That’s true...come on, we have to get going. The bell just rang,” said Makoto as she pushed Usagi up the stairs.
The four girls hurried their way up to their classroom on the third level, only to find hordes of students crowding around the entrance and windows of the room. Most of the girls seemed star struck at the sight of who ever or whatever was in the classroom. Pushing and squeezing their way in slowly, they finally stepped into the classroom with Makoto leading the way as she was the tallest and strongest among them.
“What’s going on? Why is everyone jamming up the door?” Minako cursed under her breath. Not realising that Mokoto had stopped in her track, she walked right into her.
“Ow,” Minako winced as she rubbed her nose, “what are you doing, Mako-chan?” She then walked in front of Makoto and then realised the reason why Makoto stopped in her tracks.
“Nice to meet you all,” Michiru said in her cheerful tone, “seems like we have gotten into the same class as you all.” Michiru chuckled as she turned her head towards the remaining new transfer students.
“Come on, the four of you who just came in. Get back to your places. The class will be starting soon,” said Ms Ebikawa before sliding the door shut, much to the dismay of the students outside while Usagi and the others went back to their seats still in a daze after seeing those new students. The students standing near the door, quickly rushed to the opened windows that were already occupied, resulting in more chaos.
Ignoring the chaotic situation outside the class, Ms Ebikawa continued her lesson.
“Class, we have five new students, well...” Ms Ebikawa paused for a while before continuing, “actually two new...who will be joining us from today onwards. Let’s have an introduction!” said Ms. Ebikawa as she motioned the five newcomers to go forwards.
“I’m Kaioh Michiru, 17 this year. I used to be studying in Mugen Gauken. I’m pleased to join you all as a part of this class.” The aqua haired beauty introduced herself politely and judging from the loud response, she found herself well-liken by most of her classmates especially the boys. The girls, too, were impressed by the fact that Michiru was an ex-student of the famous top institution.
“Tenoh Haruka.17.” The tall handsome blonde said in a deep, irritated voice. Although she did not continue further than that, most of the female population of the class were already smitten by Haruka who was wearing a male Juuban High uniform, unbuttoned at the top few buttons with a white T-shirt on the inside.
“It’s nice to be back. Hope you all have not forgotten about us!” said Taiki with a warm smile on his face as he pulled his two companions closer. Apparently, he was trying to make the two guys to talk.
“Seiya here.”
“Yaten here.”
The two responded in a lukewarm manner. Clearly those two were unhappy. Yaten, always being a moody person, was not too much of a concern since he had been throwing tantrum after coming to Earth. Seiya, however, who was probably the most talkative among the three, was behaving abnormally quiet with an irritated look on his face. Michiru chuckled as she turned to look at Haruka who was behaving the same way Seiya did.
“Erm...that was a good introduction,” Ms Ebikawa commented. “Talk about teenagers nowadays. They should talk properly!” She thought to herself before assigning seats to them.
Since the Three Lights’ positions were not taken up after they left, they got back to their respective seats. Taiki sat in front of Ami, while Yaten sat right beside Minako much to the girl’s delight. Yaten sighed as he slapped himself in the forehead. Taiki who was sitting a few feet next to him, saw that sight and laughed quietly to himself. Haruka and Michiru took the two joined desks in front of Makoto, while Seiya sat behind Usagi. As a result, the two sworn enemies, Haruka and Seiya, were seated next to one another, with only a few feet apart. Michiru spotted that Haruka was probably furious with the arrangement. She offered to change places with her. However Haruka rejected the offer, giving the reason Michiru would be safe if she was seated at least a metre away from Seiya.
“You’re so cute, Haruka.” Michiru smiled as she pinched Haruka’s cheek before opening her books to jolt down what the teacher had wrote on the board. She knew Haruka was being protective and felt amusingly happy that Haruka cared a lot about her. “Cute?” Haruka looked at her confusedly. Clearly, the lady-killer did not know that she just made her girlfriend happy. Meanwhile, Makoto, who was seated right behind Michiru, giggled softly to herself as she overheard the conversation between the couple in front. “So that was the surprise Haruka-san was talking about the other day…What a day! 9 sailor senshi studying in the same class...and worst of it all, Haruka-san and Seiya-kun are in the same class...wait till Rei-chan hears about this!” Makoto grinned to herself as she started to flip her text book.
