Which one is your favorite so far. Are they getting even better as the characters develop over time?

Hi everybody!!! I am new! It is great to meet fellow fanatics. Hey, i was just wondering... y'know how Ernie MacMillan gets all huffy about Draco taking points off his house 'cause "only teachers" can do that, not prefects? But in CoS, Percy, a prefect, takes points off Gryffindor! Hmm... Anyway, just a wonderment, i hope there hasn't been anything on this before now, i checked but im still new and can't be sure... If you guys can help me out i would be happy!

I think it's probably because prefects can take off points from their own House? Since they're in charge of the discipline of their House, it does make sense. They probably couldn't take points off other Houses, unlike the Inquisitors...

Also Percy was a senior prefect, as he was in the 6th year. Maybe they have more power than 5th year prefects.

Yeah, Percy was a Gryfindor and a senior prefect, so I am betting that prefects can take house points away from their own houses because they wouldn't abuse that power since it is for their own house.

Yah, I s'pose that makes sense... thanks! Hee-hee... I was just thinking of Hermione, when she gets into her sixth year, can you just see her trying to dock points off Ron?  "Im a prefect too, it's your own house..." "You KNOW you shouldn't have stolen that firewhisky..."

She will probably take points off Gryffindor if she doesn't have her homework for friday done on monday! :P Or if that parchment for Professor Flitwick is only 3 inch longer than necessary!

If Hermione takes points off Ron, he will either take points off her or just put them back on straight away

That would be hilarious... ;) On a more serious note though, I think it was mentioned in OotP that prefects are not allowed to take points off other prefects... so guess we're not going to see it happen.

Ooh, maybe that was what it was... only teachers can take house points off PREFECTS? But prefects can take it off ordinary students? Where exactly was that idea (no points off prefects) in OotP? 'Cause Ernie was a prefect, and would want to be exempt from the rules for lesser mortals... ~Tuima

I don't have th book with me now, but I think it is the part where Draco took points off some prefects, like the Hufflepuff prefect and Ron etc, and the Hufflepuff prefect was saying that he should not be able to take off points because they're all prefects... Draco replied that because he's been given powers as a member of the Inquisitional Squad, so he's able to...

ya during Umbridge's  reign, Draco as a member of the Inquistor squad ranks higher than normal prefects...so i supposed he can take points and melt out punishments whenever he likes (of cos the teachers are still higher than him)

No, that's exactly my question. Ernie (the Hufflepuff prefect) didn't know Draco was on the Inquisitorial squad, he just thought he was a prefect. So when Draco took points off him, he said, prefects can't take off house points, only teachers. Obviously Draco was exempt from that rule, but Percy wasn't when he took points of Harry and Ron in CoS! :???: Was Percy just overestimating his power? Hmmm...

I believe prefects are entitled to take points away from their own houses because they are supposed to assist the teachers in disciplinary matters.

I doubt a prefect would be allowed to add points to his or her own house.

No I dont think the prefect would be allowed to add points to their own house cos then they would just add loads and loads, but I had been wondering how Percy was allowed to take points in CoS, so Im glad someone started this thread!
