question about the dementors

Which one is your favorite so far. Are they getting even better as the characters develop over time?

I've never thought of dragons before, but I think that it's a great idea. It could also definitly bring Charlie into the books a little more. I'm sure it wouldn't be just dragons there though. It would probably be some aurors as well. But this way they wouldnt use ALL the aurors just to guard the prison. only some of them. and the rest would be out patroling or something.

The dragons guarding Azkaban is a great idea! The only problem is that once the dementors are gone, the prisoners actually have a sense of self again. That is to say, they actually know what is going on. Sure the dragons are guarding the exits, but i think they could just apparate out. I dont think that there would be enchantments on Azkaban like there are on Hogwarts, because for so long, everyone has thought that the dementors could keep control. With the dementors goen, the path is open for anyone who can apparate to escape.

Well, we've seen two jailbreaks from Azkaban with wizards - Sirius by his obsesssion and being an animagi. Barty Crouch, Jr. from his mother's sacrifce.

However, wands are needed for great magic, and breaking them in public would be a great idea. Voldemort will get them out of Azkaban ,but they can never resume their place in society. They are criminals, and the wizarding community knows it.

In the wizard community, apparition is a way of life, so anti-apparition measures would be one of the most basic of defences for prison, or any secure place.

OH yes, anti apparation spells are needed to keep wizards in line - just like bonds in iron are some in other books about wizarads

But Sirius never really knew how he escaped. He knew it was because he changed to a dog, and got past them; and swimmed and lived as a dog.

He also never lost his mind because he always knew he was innocent. That let him change and let his emotions become less comlex.

So Sirius represents all that is good - going to jail for a crime he didn't commit. Breaking out when he knew the son of his best friend was in danger. Even when Harry tried to stop him Sirius came anyway as a protector.

His death is now another burdern for Harry. His parents were kind of abstract to him, but Sirius wan't.

In GOF, Harry asked about his scar hurting, knowing Sirius would give good advice. In OotP, Harry asked hard questions about his dad, and Sirius and Lupin. Both Sirius and Lupin admitted they were not proud of it. But Sirius and Lupin were also both right - Harry is NOT James. And Snape still doesn't know that. But Snape has his faults - instead of asking Harry outright what he thought, he kicked him out. But if he had asked Harry what he thought, Harry would have told him the truth - his father was WAY of of line.

I agree with what your saying and everything, and i know that Azkaban is a way of life, but i still dont think there'd be spells on it to stop people from apparating or disapparating. I actually went and looked it up in HP #3, because i was bored...Lupin is telling Harry about Azkaban and he says,
"The fortress is set on a tiny island, way out to sea, but they dont need walls and water to keep the prisoners in, not when they're all trapped inside they're own heads, incapable of a single cheerful thought. Most of them go mad within weeks."
I would think that the "trapped inside their own heads" part is particularly relevant. If the prisoners really are as incapacitated as the books say they are (excluding Sirius), then i dont think they could apparate, or even have rational thoughts.

BTW, that quote was on...i guess its the American version, page 188, Chapter 10, in case anyone wants to check it out.

As to whether there were anti apparition measures on Azkaban while the dementors were guarding it, i'm not sure. I still believe that when the wizards built the prison anti-apparition measures would be one of the first things they consider. However, now that the dementors have been removed, I am in no doubt that the anti apparition measures are in place now, unless there has been a huge oversight by the ministry.

I dont think that there would be some sort of oversight from the ministry about this because I'm sure that DD is keeping a close eye one them. If Fudge does one tiny thing wrong from now on I'm sure that everyone will notice (especially DD). After Fudge told everyone that LV was not back just to have to take that statement back, he's lost a lot of credibility. I think that everyone is keeping a very close eye on the ministry now, and if someone forgot about putting on the anti-apparation spells there would probably be loads of people reminding them about it.

Yeah thats probably correct. Now that the dementors are out of Ministry control, they pretty much HAVE to put anti-apparation spells on Azkaban. If they dont, then it would be a huge mistake, and Dumbledore isnt prone to making mistakes.

Oh but are anti-apperation skills enough? What about Floo Powder? Portkeys? Phoenix travel? Dark arts? Travel by boat?

And there are still two other ways out. Polyjuice potion or something like it. And less complex feelings (POA).

The Dementors aren't there anymore so having less feelings won't work, but I agree that there are bound to be many other ways of escaping. Voldy and Dumbledore seem to be able to disappear at will, without apparating (I think, there's no "Crack" sound in the description)

Thats a really interesting thought, highsorceror. They would probably have more things than just anti-apparation spells. For floo powder, you could just take Azkaban off the Floo Network (Mr. Weasley mentions something about this in GoF). As for the other magical means of magical travel, im not sure how they would defend against those, if they could at all. Even in Hogwarts (with pretty much every single defense skill on it known to wizard-kind), you can still travel by Phoenix, and portkeys, and it certainly isnt barred from physical travel.

That is true. But while they might escape; Harry was right. The exposed death eaters are now criminals. Maybe Malfoy, Crabbe. and Goyle are mp expsoed for what they are. But they are known for what they are

Yes if they escape they will be wanted criminals, but will it matter? Now that Voldy is out in the open and as powerful as he was before, there isn't a need to go into exile, just to rejoin his ranks. Its more a case that they go "underground" as it were while they prepare for their hit and run missions. The main target is still bound to be Harry, but they'll have other plans too.

Hi all,
I'm just back from holyday and just read this post.
first of all, I'm not that sure about dragons guarding Askaban. They are wild animals and I'm not certain wizad can control them like that. we know they are able to guard them but as for teaching them to control a fortress and guard prisoners, I have doubts.
By the way, the MoM do not control dementors, they only have a contract with them, or something like that. Dementors can do what they want, they only go to the most interesting proposal regarding their interest.
now the question is who is going to guare te prisoners but also, and I think you all forgot, is WHERE.
We're not sure prisoners will remain in askaban, may be the MoM has other jails (honestly I don't know if JKR already talked about one but who knows, it's possible) and they can also have several possibilities to guard them : of course as you said there is Aurors, but we can also fing trolls, may be other weird animals...
And I totally agree with you about the several protections wizards should put within the jails to prevent prisoners from escape. But if 'm correct, wizard need their wand to make magic, so that only means that you must expect help from the outside, because they are quite helpless in the inside.
