Dolores Umbridge

Who do you like best and who could you definately live without? Will there be romance in the air for any of them and who will end up with who?

I wonder if her centaur experience will have changed her?

seriously, but now she will probably have to repent for all the bad things, seeing as how harry/dumbledore were right, maybe she'll do lines with the cutting quill

Umbridge

Well, her experience with the centaurs probably taught her a great deal about "lesser beings" and "half breeds". In fact, she stands for everything the fountain of magical brethern stood for. However, the concept behind it (with the goblins, centaurs, and house-elves looking up to the witch and wizard) was a lie, and one too many wizards bought into.

Obviously, it's not a universal lie, because people like Hagrid and Dumbledore have earned the respect of some of their fellow creatures. Firenz told Harry Hagrid had earned his for the respect he gave his fellow creatures, and Dumbledore respected Dobby's desire for freedom, wages, and time off when no other wizard would. Harry's never treated a centaur, house-elf, or half-giant with any less respect than another human.

The whole concept back of it is something akin to race relations. While wizards don't seem to care about the color of skin. We know of three cross-race relationships; either Fred or George asked Angelina (black) to the Yule Ball, Ginny has picked Dean Thomas (black), and Harry has dated Cho Chang (asian). Obviously, this isn't true when it comes to different races. Hagrid's a half-giant and was scorned because of it. Mrs. Black took the portrait for doing things like daring to marry a muggle (how'd you like your sister to marry one, right?).

BTW, does it occur to anybody else that Umbridge was very likely to have been a Slytherin when she went to Hogwarts?

It did occur to me, and it certainly is highly possible... after all, she did have the characteristics of a Slytherin, being hungry for power and very ambitious. Also, she obviously favoured the Slytherin House during her term as Headmistress of Hogwarts. I should think there's at least a 90% chance that she was a Slytherin...

Actually in one of hre interveiws J.K. adressed the whole racist bent of her wizarding society, she said she put it in there to kind of show what happens to a society that puchs to much stock into labels and not enough into individuals, and the whole umbridge in Slytherin is feasible but i don't think she really was...or if she is i doubt shed admit to it, why admit any connection to voldemort, which brings me to a diffrent point do you think good old voldies followers know hes part muggle, i actually think in that aspect he (and the story) have parallels to the regime of hitler, though that may be unintentional but itd make a great study anyway

umbridge (similar to the word "umbrage", which means resentment) is apty named by rowling. she deserves all the revenge that she exacts upon the students, and she finds out how bad of a teacher she is when they all use the snackboxes to get our of her class. it's also humorous when harry shows her up in the owl dada test. but the best revenge is when does the clip clop sound in the hospital. that's a great moment.

the exceptional feature of umbridge is that she is not powerful in magic even though she is the undersecretary. I don't understand why she could not remove f&g's flood.

UUUmmmBrIdGe is EVIL!!! It was frusterating and sad to see Harry in detention for the 1st weeks of school for something he was right for. Actually, through the whole story, we see harry tortured when we all know he innocent. IT BUGS ME!!!

Death to Dolores, the evil toady!!!! JK did an absolutely fabulous job with her, all simpering and fussy, ooohh, i wanted so bad to punch her lights out! 'K, sorry for the outburst, i promise i really am a nice person... . No, but seriously, her human frailties (greater idea of her own importance, losing control) just make her more hateable. I second Hermione, "that puffed-up, power hungry, crazy" old bat!!!

No offense to the Great JK; but I found Umbridge to be an unnecessary distraction to the plot, mostly because she was such an annoying, exaggerated character. JMHO, though.

Umbridge

Postby highsorcerer » Wednesday 6 August 2003 6:23:06am

Umbridge WAS important to the plot. The Ministry of Magic was out to discredit both Harry and Dumbledore, who both claimed Voldemort has returend. Fudge did it through unofficial pressure on the official press, via student organizations, Umbridge did it directly at Hogwarts. The Ministry rammed down degrees to halt any implications that things were not as they seemed (despite the evidence), Umbridge enforced them.

Ulimately, Umbridge mirrored Voldemort. She shunned the rights of "half-breeds", and suffered for it., both at the astronomy OWL (the attempt to capture Hagrid) and Harry and Hermoine's escape.

The point is that ignorance or denial only helps evil. She did her best to show that it is necssary for good people to do nothing for evil to triumph. Harry and D.A. rejected that notion, and took their stand. Umbridge, Fudge, and Percy would have stood aside until it was too late.

Umbridge represented ignorance or indifference. There was no need to fight evil as long as it didn't exist. Her blindness to the fact evil existed hurt her.

Why is she not arrested!

Postby Droosh » Saturday 21 February 2004 11:33:27pm

I've always wondered why she is permitted to leave without being arrested for her worst crime... The attempted muder of Harry by illegally setting Dementors to kiss him in the Muggle neighborhood.

Any thoughts? :???:
