Names...

Now, I'm not sure that there is anything to this, but it's just something that I picked up on... the way characters call others by either their first or last name...

I noticed in PoA that when Sirius was thought to be after Harry, they refered to him as Black, but then when they found out that wasnt' the truth, and Peter was the bad guy, he became Sirius instead of Black... I just figured that this was because Black sounded more sinister, go figure!

Then, I noted that they also did this with Peter too... He was Peter while people thoguht that he had been unjustly killed, but when he was found to be the bad guy, he became either Pettigrew or Wormtail... Last name goes with his being bad, first name good...

Anyways, I though, strange, but probably coincidence. Then, on reading OOTP, I also noted this with Kingsley Shackelbolt (sp???) Members of the Order all called him Kingsley, and Fudge and Umbridge, Shackelbolt...

Anyways, as mentioned, I'm not sure if this really means anything, or has any relevance at all, just something I picked up on!!!

Hmmm... perhaps a simpler explanation? One naturally calls one's friends by first names, and by last names with people one is not so close to or senior to yourself. After Sirius was found to be the good guy, he was their friend, and hence, automatically included in the first-name basis. Peter Pettigrew was found to be the enemy, and hence no longer James' and Lily's good friend who defended them loyally, and so, to put distance and show the emnity towards them, he was referred to on a last-name basis. The members of the Order probably refer to Kingsley by his first name because they were friends and comrades fighting on the same side, while to Fudge etc, Kingsley was just a colleague or subordinate, and so it was Shackelbolt. make sense?

After all, most call Dumbledore by his last name, but it was more a sign of respect to someone your senior or your superior than anything...

ya i agree with June...to someone familiar one would use his/her first name rather than his/her last name

I noticed this too... they always referred to Sirius by his name, but they always called Lupin by his last name. I guess it's because the books are from Harry's POV, and he calls his teachers, or people he doesn't like, by their last names, and people that he does like by their first names.

I thought that I was the only one that picked up on that, hehe when I said something to my sister about it she laughed at me. But maybe it's not a big deal at all and just a familiarity things. Now that I think about it, that's most likely what it is

it is kind of weird though i don't call anyone by there last name. But then everyone i know has common last names so no one would ever know who i was talking about hmmmm.. good idea

It differs with people. Some of my friends, well actually most, have nicknames, so I use those names normally. But others I call by surname, because it's shorter than their first name : ) !

i just finished re-reading GoF and started PS again and i've noticed that they refer to Draco as Malfoy.... so i agree that the use of last names is for people you're not too fond of and teachers (both students calling their teachers by last names, and teachers calling students by their last name)

i do find this funny that some of us have actually thought about this when it probably doesn't matter what names people use but then again, i always find things in books to think about that don't mean anything

Hmm, i was reading GoF again and the chapter about Quidditch Qorld Cup. lovegoods was mentioned and so was DoM. JK is sneaky and clever

I noticed that too. We had heard the names of a lot of characters that showed up in book 5. Cool.

I don't know if you noticed that, but the name "Sirius Black" is made up by two "opposite" terms: the name Sirius is the name of the brightest star in the sky (alpha of Canis Major), while Black is, obviously, the symbol of darkness, evil and so on...

Sirius in the sky is also near Bellatrix, which is a star of Orion...

Always talkin' 'bout the sky, maybe some of you don't know that "Luna" is the Italian for Moon. How do I know it ? I'm Italian...

you never know for suer, all we know is that JK names people for reasons . ( like in tlord of the flies Golding used the meaning of the boys names to help dipict their characters)

Most of the characters have names that fit their personalities.

Lupin- Form of Lupus, which means Wolf
Sirius, dog star, we all know that.
Lucius- Devil
Severus- Severe, also friend of Lucius in the Roman empire
Bilius (Bill's real name?)- treasure holder
Dobby- Goodwilling
Narcissa is a play on Narcissus, who was incredibly vain
Gilderoy- Gilded, as in fake
Sir Nicholas de Mimsy Porpington. Mimsy was a made up word in a jabberwocky poem to mean 'prim' or 'prudish' and Porpington mean 'slightly pompous'.

And my fav ever...Draco is a constellation, also called 'nimrod' which is a synonym for Moron....MUAHR!!!!!
