DoMyst Rooms... (definate spoilers!)

Postby Holly Golightly » Sunday 29 June 2003 3:36:41am

Okies, so here is what I have gathered... there are 12 doors leading off the entry door to the Department of Mysteries... Harry says that he has a 1/12 chance of finding the right door, so that makes 12 doors, right?

1) entry.exit door
2) death chamber (with the veil)
3) time room (containing prophecies)
4) locked door (love???)
5) brain room
6) planet room
and we dont' know what the other 6 are...

But I noticed something about them, they seem to be rooms that contain like... hrmm, how to describe it... well, so far they are; Death, Love, Time, Space, maybe the brain room is Life... they kind of represent big type things... concepts...

I have a feeling that one of the other ones they didnt' open is Music. Remember *in PS(I think)* DD says that music contains a magic far greater than anything that they learn at Hogwarts (after singing the Hogwarts School Song)

So I wonder what the other 5 might be, and if they will be relevant futher on aswell???

Any ideas people?

I think maybe the brain room is for the study of intelligence and thoughts... so perhaps there'll be a "life" room? Some other suggestions may be a "Evil" or "hate" room... after all, if they're studying about "love", there'll have to be a counterpart, unless, the locked room is about the heart... then all these feelings may be comprised in that room...

Hmm... time, space, feelings, intelligence, death... How about "fate" or "destiny" or "music" as Holly said, or "matter", "Earth", "Light"... I think I'm getting too scientific... -.-;;

Interesting topic! I haven't thought much about these rooms, but Holly appears to have hit upon it -- they do appear to be subdivisions of the great mysteries in life. I agree with June -- if there is a "love" division, there must be a "hate" division, where things such as greed, envy, anger, etc. are all studied. Perhaps if the brain room is thought and memory, then rather than a "love" room, there is a division for emotion. Speaking of memory, I wonder if there is a department of archives somewhere, a place where Harry and the others can learn more about LV's first rise to power and the work of the original Order (and by extension, Neville and Harry can learn more about their parents' thrice defiance of LV)?

This is a great topic. I think that Harry will definitly be back in the DoM in the next books. Maybe some of the other doors will be like, fears  , desires :P , family maybe :-? I know that family seems a little corny, but if you think about it family relationships are stressed a lot in these books.

-Harry has problems because his mom and dad are gone, but he still feels so connected to them. Sirius kinda acts as the father figure Harry so badly needs.
-The Weasley's are all about family, look how many of them there are! And even though Percy is a jerk, his mother still loves him and worries about him!
-Neville lives with his grandmother, and they still visit Neville's parents, who he still loves very much
-Even people like Voldemort talk about family (even though its not in a good way!), about his father leaving and such
-There's that huge family tree that we see in book 5

There's a lot more family stuff, but i dont think I'll bore you all of it, lol

yes i definatley agree with you guys on the rooms, but i don't think the room with the brians is definatley called the brain room i am sure it has to do with intelligence or something like you guys have said before.and maybe the locked door is not the room of love but something like evil, because it would make sense if it was locked because maybe they don't want to release whatever is inside of the room.

Hmm my understanding from my reading last night:

All rooms are interconected
12 doors, 11 rooms

Doors are:

1. Entrance/Exit
2. Brain room (study of thought; this is why it had tentacles of moving images).
3. Clock room (study of time; hence the time-turners).
4. Locked room (possiblly study of Love; however could be something else as not all doors checked so couldn't be sure it was the only locked room).
5. Prophecy room (study of predictions/prophecies; accessed FROM clock room therefore a room in itself?)
6. Death chamber (study of death).
7. Planet room (where Ron blew up Uranus :D ; study of space?)

That leaves 5 unchecked rooms:

8. Life Room? (makes sense if studying death)
9. Hate/Evil room (if you study love why not the oppisite?)
10. ???
11. ???
12. ???

11 could be art but music is a type of art so instead of having a room of just music and just art why not have a room with all the arts together.and if you have a room of life you have to have a room of death there is just no way around it same with the hate and love thing

Hehe, I know what they are

In the chapter where DD is telling Harry the prophecy he mentions the locked (love room)

"a force that is at once more wonderful and terrible than death, than human intelligence(we got that one :-) ), than THE FORCES OF NATURE...."

ie possibly:

Earth
Air
Water
Fire

Seperate or together who knows but it's definately at least one more room. :D

This could be a long shot, but maybe the room with the locked door holds the meaning of life itself. :-?

another room could be based on how magic is scientifically possible. the "meaning of magic" perhaps. just a thought.

this might seem silly, but perhaps, the locked room isn't love at all. I'm not saying there isn't a love room, but perhaps in the mix of rooms there is a future room, and we can never know what the future can bring, so therefore the door is locked. If the theory of Newton's Law applies to the rooms, then an opposite room to the future would be a past room, kind of like an archive...and maybe an equal room, the exit and enterance, which could be the present time.

Of course other ideas are

intellegince
death (the veil)
life
music???? (i don't know where it comes in, but hey i like music)
love
hate
future (what exactly will happend...possible locked)
past
nature (the forces of things on earth)
space (the forces of things beyond our control)
prophecy (basic uncomplete events of the future)

of course music kinda stands alone, yet maybe music could be apart of a human made achivement...i mean humans took hold of physics and created music...or maybe music is part of a nature thing, i mean music is a part of physics and a part of physical chemistry (octaves)... physics are the forces of nature...and music is physics...so maybe that's why my physics teacher married my music teacher....he he he...just a thought

Ok, I am sorry to post once more after that nice essay length one i posted minutes before, but i feel the need to contradict myself...sorry

the future room could be the locked room, but maybe future falls with the prophcy room...could the locked room but ultimate wisdom?

Wisdom is different than knowledge or intellegince...for instance, Hermione has intellegince, but DD is wise. It is beyond all humanly matters to know what is exactly the right thing to do...or the ways of the world...anyone can learn about the world, but few are actually wise to it.

"a force that is at once more wonderful and terrible than death, than human intelligence, than the forces of nature...." hmmm could that be wisdom?

Some of the points you've made are brilliant...i.e. I now think that the prophecy room is the study of the future and therefore another room would be the study of the past, but some of your comments make me wonder.

a force that is at once more wonderful and terrible than death, than human intelligence, than the forces of nature...." hmmm could that be wisdom?

It's definately love that is so terrible as DD says so at the end, he also says that that is what is contained in the locked room...there could be more than one locked room however as Harry doesn't try all of them.

Newton's laws are proberbly not at the forefront of JK's mind when she writes these fantastical books..if they were she'd broken many laws of nature already (I won't detail those that I can think of as there are just so many).

This gives us 12 rooms:

1.Death
2.Life
3.Future
4.Past
5.Entrance/Exit
6.Forces of Nature
7.Music or the Arts
8.Time
9.Space
10.Love
11.Hate
12.Thought

What do you guys think??[/quote]

Fabulous topic...great job, Holly (a fellow Ravenclaw! )! :D I definitely look forward to posting on this thread when I return and have more time, but it looks like I'll have to be doing some serious re-reading of book 5 to get all my details straight! The possibilities are endless, and I love all the speculation about the different rooms!

I have some questions for you lot to chew on (if you like!) while I'm gone:

(1) Who (presuming they will!) do you think will return to the DoM and what may they learn there in future books besides what's in each room? Will the 'use' any of the rooms and if so, how?

(2) What are your thoughts on Harry revisiting the veil if he does? I don't think Sirius is 'coming back', but could and will Harry possibly communicate with him?

(3) Do you think the final showdown between Voldemort and Harry may happen at the DoM? If so, what may happen there? If not, what would Harry be seeking to do in the DoM besides talk to Sirius?

Any thoughts? :???: Do share your ideas! Can't wait to post on this one!!
